Route Supervisor (Dispatch)
The Route Supervisor (Dispatch) coordinates and oversees the daily dispatch operations of the Transportation Department to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services for our students and staff. This position serves as the primary communication hub between drivers, schools, transportation supervisors, fleet maintenance, and emergency personnel to ensure uninterrupted transportation operations.
Core Responsibilities:
- Support district instructional priorities by ensuring transportation services minimize disruptions to student learning.
- Coordinate daily dispatch operations for regular education, special education, and activity transportation while collaborating with the afternoon Dispatch Coordinator to ensure seamless service throughout the day.
- Monitor route performance and proactively address delays to maximize on-time arrivals.
- Communicate transportation issues promptly with schools and transportation leadership to minimize instructional disruptions.
- Support routing adjustments that improve service reliability and operational efficiency.
- Assist with field trip and extracurricular transportation that extends learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
- Participate in emergency response planning to ensure continuity of transportation services during emergencies or inclement weather.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree or coursework in transportation management, logistics, communications, public administration, or related field preferred.
- Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in school transportation, dispatching, logistics coordination, or related operations preferred.
- Experience in a K12 transportation environment preferred.
- Valid Oklahoma driver's license required.
- Acceptable driving record.
- Ability to meet district background check requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of school transportation operations, routing principles, dispatch procedures, and transportation safety regulations.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local transportation laws and compliance requirements.
- Ability to effectively operate two-way radio systems, GPS/AVL technology, dispatch software, routing software, and transportation management systems.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and multitasking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to remain calm, prioritize effectively, and make sound decisions during emergencies and rapidly changing operational situations.
- Ability to analyze operational data and implement process improvements.
- Strong customer service and conflict-resolution skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and transportation technology systems.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare operational reports.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with employees, administrators, parents, students, and community partners.
- Ability to work flexible schedules when operational needs require.
Physical/Mental Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout transportation facilities.
- Ability to operate computers, radios, telephones, and other communication equipment.
- Ability to hear and communicate effectively in person and through electronic communication systems.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment:
- Office and transportation operations environment.
- Frequent interaction with drivers, supervisors, school administrators, parents, students, and maintenance personnel.
- Occasional travel to schools, transportation facilities, accident scenes, and operational locations.
- Frequent exposure to stressful and time-sensitive situations requiring rapid decision making.
- May require early morning, evening, weekend, holiday, or emergency response assignments.
- Primarily an office environment with frequent interruptions and high interactions with transportation staff.
- Requires the flexibility to work occasional early morning or evening hours during operational emergencies or special events.
