Yard Driver
The Yard Driver (also known as a Yard Jockey or Trailer Spotter) is responsible for safely operating company-owned or leased yard trucks to move trailers and materials around the warehouse yard. This role plays a key part in keeping trailer flow efficient, organized, and safe. The Yard Jockey also supports dock operations and may assist with forklift driving or sorting when needed.
WhatYou'll Be Doing as a Yard Driver:
- Operate yard truck (hostler) to move trailers within the facility safely and efficiently.
- Function as a yard jockey or trailer spotter, ensuring trailers are positioned at the correct dock doors for loading/unloading.
- Perform routine trailer checks and actively maintain yard organization.
- Inspect and maintain yard truck condition (fuel, tires, oil, lights, etc.) and report mechanical issues promptly to the Supervisor.
- Record trailer moves accurately on the trailer movement log.
- Verify contents of trailer loads against shipping papers.
- Communicate effectively with dock supervisors to coordinate trailer moves and maintain flow efficiency.
- Ensure all trailers are properly chocked and doors secured before movement.
- Assist in forklift or general warehouse duties (such as sorting, stacking, or manual material handling) during downtime or as needed to support overall operations.
- Maintain safe working conditions and consistently follow all safety protocols.
- Adapt to changes in shift, responsibilities, or work schedules as required.
- High School Diploma or GED (required).
- 1+ year of driving or yard experience (preferred).
- Valid driver's license (required).
- Ability to read and speak English well enough to follow safety procedures and job instructions.
- Comfortable performing manual labor in outdoor environments.
- A strong commitment to safety and efficiency in a logistics setting.
- This position requires constant standing, walking, bending, and stooping.
- You must be able to safely operate heavy equipment (yard truck).
- Capable of performing physically demanding tasks in an outdoor environment, including connecting/disconnecting trailers and securing trailer doors.
- Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the workday, especially when assisting with general warehouse tasks.
- This role requires working primarily in a non-climate-controlled outdoor yard and warehouse environment.
- You may be exposed to dust, loud noise, and fluctuating temperatures (hot and cold).
- Hazards in the yard and dock areas require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
