PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

The VP of Fleet provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all vehicles and equipment within the company’s transmission, distribution, and substation operations. This role ensures the safe, reliability, and cost-effective availability of fleet assets including bucket trucks, digger derricks, trailers, pickups, cranes, stringing equipment, tooling, and heavy equipment so crews can deliver projects on time and within budget. The VP of Fleet manages fleet lifecycle planning, preventative maintenance, compliance with DOT/OSHA ANSI regulations, vendor relationships, and cost controls.

This position supports field operations by aligning equipment resources with project schedules and storm response needs while leading the service team. Success is measured by maximizing uptime, reducing lifecycle costs, ensuring full compliance, and providing responsive fleet support to all business units.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP & PLANNING
  • Develop and execute fleet strategy aligned with company growth and project pipeline.
  • Develop a forecast for the fleet regarding capital planning, replacement cycles, and storm response.
  • Establish and manage annual fleet operating and capital budgets.
  • Directly oversee Fleet personnel.
  • Enforce safety first culture.
  • Recommend improvements to reduce costs and improve asset utilization.
FLEET OPERATIONS AND ASSEST MANAGEMENT
  • Oversee acquisition, assignment, utilization, and disposal of vehicles and equipment.
  • Develop preventative maintenance programs/service schedules and ensure they are followed across all assets.
  • Track equipment utilization and assign underused equipment where needed.
  • Implement fleet management software and reporting dashboards.
  • Maintain accurate fleet records.
FINANCIAL & VENDOR MANAGEMENT
  • Negotiate purchasing, leasing, rental, fuel, and maintenance agreements with vendors.
  • Manage the annual fleet budget and track expenditures against the plan.
  • Track and monitor total cost of ownership (TCO) for each asset class.
  • Track and monitor cost per mile/hour for vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Drive cost savings through lifecycle planning, bulk purchasing, and vendor partnerships.
COMPLIANCE & RISK MANAGEMENT
  • Ensure fleet meets DOT, CDL, OSHA, EPA, and customer requirements.
  • Develop and oversee inspection, licensing, insurance, and registration processes.
  • Partner with Safety Director to monitor and reduce vehicle accidents/incidents.
OPERATIONAL SUPPORT
  • Coordinate with VP of Distribution and VP of Transmission to align fleet resources with job schedules.
  • Mobilize fleet assets rapidly for storm restoration and emergency response.
  • Support field leadership with responsive service and equipment solutions.
TEAM LEADER SHIP
  • Lead, Mentor, and develop fleet service managers, mechanics, and support personnel.
  • Develop and standardize fleet practices across all company yards and regions.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Directly oversee Fleet personnel.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Your success in this role will be measured by

  • Fleet availability/uptime: TBD
  • Preventative Maintenance Compliance: 100% on-time PM’s.
  • Fleet Cost Management:
    Stay within budget; reduce lifecycle costs year-over year.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    Zero missed inspections or compliance failures.
  • Safety Performance:
    Reduction in vehicle incidents and accidents.
  • Operational Support:
    Positive feedback from VP’s of Distribution and Transmission on fleet readiness.
QUALIFICATIONS Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field strongly preferred
  • MBA or advanced degree preferred but not required with sufficient experience
