Assistant Band Director
Skiatook Public Schools is seeking an Assistant Band Director for the 2026‑2027 school year in Skiatook, Oklahoma.
Responsibilities- Assist in developing and implementing a comprehensive band curriculum aligned with state standards for concert and marching band.
- Teach instrumental techniques, music theory, sight‑reading, ensemble playing, and orchestral skills to students of varying abilities.
- Conduct rehearsals, provide individual feedback, assess student progress, and manage student behavior.
- Select repertoire for performances and competitions and prepare students for music festivals and events.
- Assist with band participation in concerts, parades, pep rallies, football games, and other school activities.
- Design and execute marching band shows, coordinating with other band directors for performance quality and stage presence.
- Foster a positive, inclusive band culture that encourages leadership, collaboration, and musical growth.
- Recruit new band members, maintain enrollment records, and communicate with students, parents, and staff regarding band activities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Percussion Performance, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- State teaching certification in Music Education or secondary education; endorsement in Music or instrumental music preferred.
- Proven experience as a percussionist and music teacher, including high‑school level instruction and directing a band or percussion ensemble.
- Proficiency on various percussion instruments (snare drum, timpani, marimba, vibraphone, drum set, etc.) and knowledge of classical and contemporary styles.
- Ability to arrange and compose music for percussion ensembles or band.
- Strong instructional skills: lesson‑plan development, classroom management, and teaching music theory and its application to percussion.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, constructive feedback, collaboration with staff, and ability to work with diverse student populations.
- Experience conducting and teaching percussion ensembles or school bands, and preparation for performances and competitions.
- Familiarity with music technology (Finale, Sibelius) and basic audio equipment for recording or amplification.
- Physical ability to handle large percussion instruments and lead outdoor marching band rehearsals.
- Passion for teaching young musicians, patience, creativity, adaptability, and strong organizational skills.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development in music education.
