NHS Locum Specialty Doctor | East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust

For entry to the Speciality Doctor grade, applicants must have at least four years of post-registration training, of which at least two years must be in a speciality training programme in Emergency Medicine (for example, ACCS), or must be able to demonstrate comparable skills and competencies.

The job title of the post is Speciality Doctor in Emergency Medicine. The post is paid on the Speciality Doctor scale. Applicants wishing to work part-time would be considered.

Job Plans are worked around a twenty-four-person rota. The job is 10 PA, typically comprising 1.5 SPA and 8.5 DCC.

The post holder will be encouraged to advance their career in Emergency Medicine and will be supported in obtaining appropriate postgraduate qualifications and maintaining their continuing professional development.

The postholder is expected to work on the middle-grade tier rota in the department and provide the relevant expertise and experience necessary to ensure the efficient primary management of emergency cases. The postholder will be required to work with the other team members in the management of the department workload. The postholder will also be expected to provide supervision to the junior members of the team.

The postholder will be expected to undertake full clinical duties, including the immediate care of critically ill patients attending the Emergency Department and patients presenting with major and minor injuries. This will include initial resuscitation where appropriate, diagnosis, management and treatment, referral and discharge under the guidance of the Consultants. Referrals may be made to GPs, appropriate specialist teams for continued hospital care, or other relevant services.

The postholder will be expected to follow the various guidelines and protocols issued in the department. In the case of major trauma, cardiac arrests and critically ill patients attending the department, the postholder will be expected to act in a team leadership role, following appropriate life support guidelines.

Postholders would be expected to gain and maintain certification in ALS, ATLS, APLS or recognised equivalents to these courses.

In light of changing work practices, the work programme may need to be varied in the future.

Established in 2003 ELHT is a large integrated health care organisation providing high quality acute secondary healthcare for the people of East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen.

We currently provide high quality services and treat over 700,000 patients a year from the most serious of emergencies to planned operations and procedures. We employ over 8,000 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work and achievements.

The department itself has a large multi-disciplinary team encompassing Consultants, Specialty Doctors, Higher Emergency Medicine Trainees, Junior Clinical Fellows, Foundation doctors, General Practice Trainees, Advanced Care Practitioners, Physicians Associates, Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Physiotherapy practitioners. As well as the nursing team. The department also supports the education of medical students from UCLAN and Lancaster Universities. We are a teaching unit providing teaching for all grades of staff.

You will be assigned an educational supervisor who will meet with you regularly to ensure your educational needs are met whilst you are with us and we encourage Junior Clinical Fellows to undertake the Life Support Courses whilst you are with us. To aid this you will have access to a study leave budget. There is simulation training which is run on the shop floor and that you will be encouraged to attend.
