Skiatook Public Schools is seeking applicants for a High School Counselor for the  school year.

Full-time / 177-days / Extra Duty 30 days

SALARY

Certified / Extra Duty Counselor Stipend

SUMMARY:
Help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
These statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.
  • Assist students in course and subject selection.
  • Obtain and disseminate occupational/post-secondary education information to students.
  • Provide updated information to parents and confer with parents whenever necessary.
  • Participate in Parent/Teacher Conferences.
  • Work to discover and develop special abilities of students and to resolve student’s educational handicaps.
  • Register students new to the school and orient them to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning.
  • Work to prevent students from dropping out of school.
  • Help students evaluate career interests and choices.
  • Remain readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity.
  • Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.
  • Guide students in their participation in school and community activities.
  • Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality.
  • Supervise the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications.
  • Make recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships.
  • Provide student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board’s policy on student records.
  • Assist in the orientation of new faculty members.
  • Provide in-service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.
  • Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the counseling department.
  • Take an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
  • Interpret the guidance program to the community.
  • Arrange for summer school work.
  • Collaborate with school nurse and administration regarding program development.
  • Coordinate and facilitate PSAT/NMSQT, ACT, correspondence, and state mandated tests, as needed.
  • Perform credit checks for all students.
  • Coordinate application process with area Career Tech Center.
  • Assists with special projects.
  • All other duties as assigned by the administrator.

EDUCATION and/or

EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field
  • Master’s Degree in Counseling or related field
  • Valid Oklahoma School Counselor Certificate
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws applicable to education and special education. Ability to follow all district policies and procedures. Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done. Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators. Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player.

Ability to document records accurately. Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees. Ability to listen effectively.
