Plant Process Engineer

Horizon Ag Products is a leader in the Biostimulant industry, manufacturing soluble humus products for agriculture since 1983. The company operates seven manufacturing plants across seven states with approximately 140 employees.

Position located in Union City, OK or Lakewood, CO. Requires up to 25% travel.

Summary

This position is responsible for providing plant process engineering support to all production plants. The role focuses on business growth and improving plant productivity through process improvements, asset preservation, expansion, cost reduction, new product introduction, and safety initiatives. Key responsibilities include troubleshooting, process support, project management, and ensuring operational excellence.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Planning, designing, commissioning, and startup of new processes as defined by executive leadership.
  • Managing expense and capital–based projects from concept through basic engineering, estimating costs, sizing equipment, piping, pumps, tanks, material of construction, control strategies, interlocks, P&’s, procedures, commissioning, and startup.
  • Analyzing plant capacity constraints and identifying projects to streamline bottlenecks and increase productivity.
  • Providing day‑to‑day process engineering and technical support to plant operations, including troubleshooting and training operators and maintenance personnel.
  • Managing interactions with internal and external stakeholders, including other engineers, project managers, corporate leadership, operations, contractors, and safety teams.
  • Utilizing KPIs, scorecards, and visual management to upgrade plants and procedures to better meet customer needs.
  • Overseeing continuous improvement projects through proper change‑management procedures.
  • Managing outside contractors for all construction and improvement projects.
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws, including OSHA, MSHA, and environmental regulations.
  • Implementing and completing projects safely, providing training and supporting safety policies and practices.
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • BS or MS in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years of process engineering experience in agricultural or chemical operations.
  • Proficiency in leading and executing projects, including new builds and commissioning (CSU) with strong project management skills.
  • Detailed knowledge of equipment and piping design, sizing, and specifications for liquid and solid handling operations.
  • Demonstrated success in process improvement and debottlenecking.
  • Strong problem‑solving capability in a mid‑size, growing manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time to other Horizon Ag‑Products locations.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD or similar, Microsoft Office, with strong computer skills.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, teamwork, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to apply fundamental engineering and business principles.
  • Comfortable working in a plant environment and with cross‑functional teams on the floor.
  • Independent and self‑motivated with high initiative and ability to manage a heavy workload.
  • Experience with automation and control systems, historians, trend analysis, and data analysis.
  • Continuous improvement, Lean, or Six Sigma manufacturing experience.
