Basic Purpose
Positions in this job family are responsible for performing routine professional social service and law enforcement duties in the areas of assessment of criminogenic need, transition plan design, treatment referral and ongoing monitoring of offender behavior. Supervision services are provided in the community for probationers, parolees and inmates in re‑entry programs for the purpose of increasing public safety through the reduction of future criminal behavior.
TypicalFunctions
- Manage a caseload of adult probationers using motivational interviewing to assess criminogenic risk and determine the offender’s stage of change for each identified need area.
- Refer offenders to appropriate treatment and/or programs to target primary criminogenic needs and monitor activities to ensure adherence to action steps negotiated through transition planning.
- Assist offenders in obtaining and maintaining employment and build pro‑social networks of family and friends.
- Conduct investigations including home visits, pre‑sentence, interstate, pre‑pardon and pre‑parole investigations.
- Prepare all reports concerning activities of offenders, special reports, violations, court reports, and provide recommendations for the use of the releasing authority.
- Maintain documentation in physical or electronic format and monitor payment of financial obligations ordered by the releasing authority.
- Assist in security operations during prison disturbances, arrest and transport offenders, and assist with out‑of‑state transfers.
- Conduct periodic drug and alcohol screenings and assist probationers with compliance with the Mary Rippy Violent Crime Registration Act and Sex Offender Registration, if applicable.
- Knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to offenders and the Department of Corrections.
- Knowledge of evidence‑based practices in offender supervision, community resources, re‑entry services, and report writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with communities, families, service agencies and support systems.
- Ability to motivate offenders to change antisocial behaviors, manage substantial caseloads, testify in court, communicate effectively orally and in writing, implement evidence‑based practices, and use electronic technology for offender management.
- For Level III, ability to provide consultation, training, mentoring and oversight in a specific area of evidence‑based practice.
- Level I:
Bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, social work, criminology, education, criminal justice administration, penology or police science (minimum 24 semester hours). Five years of experience in building trades or equivalent education/experience may also qualify. - Level II:
Bachelor’s degree as above, plus two years of correctional experience in social casework involving classification, assessment or field supervision of probationers and parolees and/or inmates; or a master’s degree in the field with one year of required work experience. - Level III:
Bachelor’s degree as above, plus four years of correctional experience in social casework or a master’s degree in the field with one year of required work experience.
Applicants must be willing and able to perform all job‑related travel, possess a valid driver’s license, and be subject to drug testing. Probation and Parole Officers must meet all training and qualifications for peace officers required by Oklahoma Statutes, including any required psychological or physical testing for eligibility for a basic police course.
Eligibility exclusions: individuals convicted of nonviolent felonies or crimes involving moral turpitude without a full pardon, any felony offense, sex‑offender registration, misdemeanors of domestic violence without expungement, or dishonorably discharged from any branch of the armed services are not eligible. Certain positions are classified as safety sensitive.
