Duties
  • Perform and evaluate laboratory tests - Conduct a full range of clinical analyses (chemistry, microbiology, hematology, immunology, molecular diagnostics, etc.) using manual and automated techniques to support patient diagnosis and treatment.
  • Ensure quality assurance and control - Monitor and document quality control systems to ensure the accuracy, precision, and reliability of test results in compliance with policy and accrediting standards.
  • Implement laboratory procedures - Select established methodologies for requested analyses; implement basic corrective actions; calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments; and prepare required reagents and media.
  • Provide technical support - Offer technical assistance and training to laboratory personnel; recognize abnormal or unusual test results and consult with supervisors regarding corrective actions.
  • Maintain laboratory operations and compliance - Troubleshoot equipment issues; follow all safety, infection control, and regulatory requirements to ensure efficient and compliant laboratory performance.

  • On-call hours or standby duty may be required.
  • Physical Demands: walking, sitting, standing, reaching and bending to assess and treat patients.
  • Rotational schedule to cover days, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • You may need to set up direct deposit for pay.

Background Investigation Requirement

This position requires successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment. A background investigation verifies identity, employment history, education, and other relevant information to determine suitability for Federal service. Applicants must complete all required forms within five calendar days of issuance. Timely completion is critical to avoid delays.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the position. Experience includes paid and unpaid work, including volunteer work. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience. You must clearly identify duties and responsibilities and hours per week for each position.

Education

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

  • A. A Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics, AND successful completion of a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist program accredited by NAACLS or an equivalent accrediting body;
  • B. A full 4-year course of study including 12 months in a college or hospital-based medical technology program or approved by a recognized accrediting organization;
  • C. A Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree with specified science coursework and five years of acceptable clinical laboratory experience, with certification/licensure as a medical technologist (generalist) by a recognized credentialing agency.

GS-09:

  • Completion of 2 years of graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent in medical technology or related field; OR
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 performing routine and complex laboratory procedures, instrument calibration, quality control, and related tasks; OR
