Senior Phlebotomist

Job Description:

• The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols and safety regulations.
• The role includes performing blood draws, preparing specimens for testing, and ensuring accurate documentation and labeling.

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and record maintenance and decontamination data.
• Update patient information accurately in laboratory systems.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain the specimen collection process (venipuncture, urine, fecal, etc.) clearly and courteously to patients.
• Demonstrate proper blood collection techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Understand and follow physician orders; match laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
• Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens appropriately for transport while maintaining sample integrity.
• Store specimens according to required temperatures and ensure proper containment.
• Comply with OSHA, DEP, and laboratory safety regulations.
• Attend annual department training sessions.
• Answer telephone calls and provide information from laboratory results as appropriate.

• Valid phlebotomy certification in the state of employment (if required).
• Minimum 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED; 2 4 years of related experience preferred.
