Position Summary The Medical Laboratory Scientist performs a wide range of laboratory tests to support accurate diagnosis and treatment of patients. This role is responsible for specimen collection, analysis, and reporting of results while ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with regulatory standards. The position contributes directly to patient care by providing timely and reliable laboratory data and supports a culture of safety, teamwork, and excellent customer service to patients, providers, and staff.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related life science field from an accredited institution

Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification preferred

Previous experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred

Ability to participate in on-call rotation with reliable transportation

Current BLS Certification (Must obtain within 90 days of hire)

Key Responsibilities Perform routine and complex laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures and physician orders

Analyze blood, urine, and other body fluids to assist in diagnosis and treatment

Collect, label, and process patient specimens using proper identification and collection techniques

Prepare and verify blood products and perform compatibility testing for transfusions

Ensure accuracy of test results by performing quality control and calibration procedures

Review and validate test results for completeness, accuracy, and clinical relevance prior to reporting

Report laboratory results in a timely manner to support clinical decision-making

Troubleshoot equipment issues and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs

Maintain laboratory instruments, supplies, and inventory to support efficient operations

Document testing, maintenance, and quality control activities in compliance with regulatory standards

Organize workload to prioritize STAT and urgent testing needs

Communicate critical values and abnormal results to appropriate clinical staff promptly

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment following infection control and safety protocols

Assist with training and mentoring of students and new staff as needed

Ensure compliance with hospital accreditation standards, including utilization of SQSS (Strategic Quality Support System) for compliance tracking.

Adhere to all hospital policy and procedure, follow HIPAA guidelines, available for duty in the event of a disaster, completes all required educational training and performs other job duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements Frequent standing and walking throughout clinical areas for extended periods.

Ability to assist with lifting, repositioning, transferring, or supporting patients.

Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds frequently.

Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and kneeling while assisting patients or performing clinical tasks.

Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to operate medical equipment, and document care.

Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

Ability to visually read medical charts and operate clinical technology.

Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.

Potential Hazards Exposure to hospital-related hazards including blood-borne pathogens, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, x-ray/electromagnetic energy, electric shock, and chemicals. Employees must adhere to all hospital safety protocols, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.
