summaryunder the supervision of a shift supervisor or lead shift supervisor, the boiler auxiliary operator is responsible for inspection and operation of the main boiler and its auxiliary equipment including fuel and ash handling systems.
essential duties and responsibilitiesinclude the following; other duties may be assigned. Coordinates with, and assists, the unit operator in the start-up, operation, and shut down of equipment and support systems in the boiler area according to established procedures and practices. Monitors the operation of the coal handling system from the storage silo through the boiler coal feeders, observes soot blower operation, reports all malfunctions to the unit operator, calls for assistance to back out faulty soot blowers as required, checks lubrication and inspects for mechanical problems.
Performs operational inspections on boiler and other related equipment. Keeps the unit operator and shift supervisor informed of equipment condition and systems status. Enters maintenance requests as required. Walks down boiler area, observes furnace conditions in regard to ash and slag accumulations, mechanical malfunctions, lubrication problems and housekeeping needs. Operates ash system throughout the boiler through the ash handling system and fly ash silo.
Checks operation of the precipitators including rappers, hopper heating, dampers and control panels to ensure proper operation. Assists with unloading of coal trains as required. Cleans up spills and maintains systems and areas of responsibility in a clean, orderly and safe condition. Completes required report forms and makes daily log entries. Completes required training within established time frames. Performs unit auxiliary operator duties as required.

qualificationseducation and experience: requires a high school diploma or general education degree (ged) and three (3) years of experience related to the operation of a power plant, preferably coal fired, combined cycle, or simple cycle, or one-year experience at the systems auxiliary operator level. Related education may be substituted for experience at a rate of one (1) year of education for two (2) years of experience.
language skills: read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
math skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
computer skills: ability to use web-based training applications and email.
certificates, licenses, registrations: valid driver's license required.
work schedule requirements: this job works a rotating shift schedule that may require overtime and short notice work. May also require travel on short notice.
