5-Axis CNC Machinist
Position Summary
The 5-Axis CNC Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and inspecting complex precision-machined components using advanced 5-axis CNC machining centers. This position requires a strong understanding of CNC machining processes, tooling, work holding, blueprint interpretation, GD&T, and in-process inspection. The ideal candidate has experience in machining complex, close-tolerance components for aerospace and other highly regulated industries and takes ownership of quality, productivity, and safe machining practices.
This position will work closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Programming, Quality, and Production to ensure components are manufactured accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with customer and company requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
CNC Machining & Setup
- Set up and operate 5-axis CNC machining centers to produce complex precision components.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and GD&T requirements.
- Review CNC programs, setup sheets, tooling requirements, and work instructions prior to machining.
- Perform complete machine setups, including work-holding, tooling, offsets, probing, and tool length/wear adjustments.
- Load and verify CNC programs and make appropriate machining adjustments within established procedures.
- Select and install appropriate cutting tools, inserts, fixtures, and work-holding devices.
- Establish and maintain accurate work and tool offsets.
- Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspection of machined components.
- Make appropriate tool wear and offset adjustments to maintain dimensional requirements.
- Identify machining issues and communicate problems affecting quality, tooling, cycle time, or production.
- Safely operate overhead cranes, hoists, forklifts, or other material-handling equipment when trained and authorized.
Aerospace Quality & Documentation
- Maintain strict adherence to aerospace quality standards, customer specifications, and company procedures.
- Verify material, tooling, programs, and documentation before beginning production.
- Complete required inspection and production documentation accurately and on time.
- Maintain traceability of materials, parts, and inspection records as required.
- Identify and immediately communicate nonconforming material or processes.
- Support corrective actions and continuous improvement activities.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
Programming & Process Improvement
- Work with CNC Programmers and Manufacturing Engineering to improve machining processes.
- Provide feedback regarding tool selection, work-holding, cutting parameters, cycle times, and machine performance.
- Assist with troubleshooting complex machining problems.
- Recommend improvements to reduce setup time, cycle time, scrap, and tool consumption.
- Assist with proving out new programs and processes.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the machining department.
Required Qualifications
· High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
· 3+ years of CNC machining experience, preferably with 5-axis machining.
· Demonstrated ability to independently set up and operate CNC machining centers.
· Strong blueprint reading and GD&T knowledge.
· Ability to use precision measuring equipment such as:
- Micrometers
- Calipers
- Height gauges
- Indicators
- Bore gauges
- Pin gauges
- Other precision inspection equipment
· Ability to calculate and apply machining offsets and cutter compensation.
· Ability to troubleshoot machining, tooling, and dimensional issues.
· Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with Production, Engineering, and Quality.
