DescriptionThe purpose of the position is to provide practical nursing care in a general hospital or non-ambulatory setting. Patients may include medical, surgical, pediatric and obstetric and emergency room care.
Minimum QualificationsEducation – Graduation from an accredited practical nursing curriculum is required.
Experience – One (1) year relevant experience is preferred.
Licenses & Certification – Incumbent is required to possess current licensure by the State of Oklahoma or National Council of State Boards of Nursing for Practical Nursing. Current BLS upon hire or within 60 days of hire.
Knowledge & Skills –
- Knowledge and skill sufficient to perform a moderately difficult range of nursing care.
- Knowledge of human body structure, function, illnesses, and/or disease entities and skill sufficient to communicate with nurses, patients, family members and clinic staff.
- Knowledge and skill sufficient to observe and reliably report the physical and emotional changes for inclusion in the patient's care plan.
- Knowledge and skill sufficient to assess immunization status and to administer immunizations in accordance with current immunization schedules and to recognize contraindications and adverse reactions.
- Knowledge and skill sufficient to prepare dosages, administer medications, and recognize contraindications of prescribed medications.
- Knowledge and skill sufficient to respond to emergency situations.

Work EnvironmentWork is performed in a non-ambulatory health care setting. Because patients need round-the-clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends and holidays. The number of patients assigned per shift will vary with facility, however, in most settings, the caseload is heavy and the environment is fast paced. Nurses spend considerable time walking, bending, stretching and standing;
They assist in patient transfers, so to guard against back injury; they must follow proper body mechanics and procedures for lifting/moving patients. Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases. In addition, they treat patients that may be confused, irrational, agitated, and/or uncooperative. There is common exposure to infectious communicable diseases, potentially hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials.
The work may include a certain amount of exposure to hostile and/or emotionally disturbed patients, families, and visitors. Must be aware of all risks involved and be willing to take precautions as requested and required.
Work in a non-ambulatory health care setting requires considerable walking between exam and treatment rooms and long periods of moving about the work unit. Work requires regular and recurring bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting of patients or similar activities. Incumbent must be able to lift at least 50 pounds. Position also requires ability to cope with constant changes in a stress-laden environment.
