Salary Range: $9.75 – $14.00 per hour
Shift: Open
Purpose: To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.
Responsibilities- Greet all customers, respond to customer questions and explain store policies courteously.
- Wrap, package, and sell product items including sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, samples, and fried foods.
- Process customer purchases quickly and accurately using an electronic cash register, scanner, and scale.
- Review the perishable department Communication Board daily for materials updates and follow guidelines for the Sampling Program and intercom announcements.
- Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area, unload trucks, verify merchandise against invoices, inspect deliveries for shortages, damage or quality, sort cases for stocking or preparation, and code‑date all case items.
- Adhere to local, state, and federal health codes and clean department floors, mirrors, cases, tables, coolers, freezers, production equipment, preparation area, and shelves; safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals.
- Transport cases to the sales floor, cooler, freezer, or preparation area on stocking carts or pallets, open cases, place merchandise in the specified location, and rotate displays.
- Maintain safety for self, customers, and coworkers by understanding and practicing store safety rules; notify a supervisor of hazards immediately and remove broken containers or packing materials from the floor.
- Understand operation and safety requirements of equipment such as balers, case cutters, pallet jacks, intercom, pricing guns, slicers, scales, wrappers, steam tables, fryers, and stoves; be 18 years or older to operate certain equipment.
- Evaluate product quality, remove unsalable or returnable items, re‑process merchandise into a saleable form, or mark down price according to markdown policy.
- Check case and cooler/freezer temperatures four times daily and record each check.
- Record “out-of-stock” conditions and report to the department manager.
- Fill and stock sliced meat and cheese cases, salad cases, other display cases, and counter/display tables throughout the store.
- Perform miscellaneous supervisor assigned tasks, substitute for absent workers, and provide products and services during peak periods.
- Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and counting skills.
- Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions and procedures to supervisors and coworkers.
- A stable work and educational history.
- Reading and writing English proficiency to read instructions, labels, numbers, reports, invoices, and order forms.
- Judgment in merchandising decisions including product placement, opening cases, assessing damage, customer interactions, display quality, and ordering.
- Ability to open cases and stock to prevent product damage.
- Clear pricing, marking, and labeling of products for customers and cashiers.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience in a related job.
- Prior experience operating a baler, case cutter, cleaning/sanitation equipment, pallet jack, intercom, pricing gun, knives, slicers, scales, steam table, wrapper, fryer, or stove; must be 18 years or older to operate certain equipment.
- Mobility: move to receive product, move items to floor or storage, open/cut cases, inspect product quality, sort cases, build displays, allocate space, order merchandise and supplies, clean and maintain, remove trash, price mark, sign, handle cash, checks, vouchers, credit, debit, EBT transactions, labels, packaging, debris, and operate equipment.
- Work on tile or concrete for up to 8 hours.
- Lifts: up to 50 lbs. from 6 inches to 84 inches onto storage racks; moves up to 50 lbs. within 15 yards; stretches to 84 inches for top shelf.
- Manual tasks: grasp wet/iced/cold metal/plastic products, twist at waist, move stocking carts, pallet jacks (up to 300 lbs.), maintenance equipment approximately 25 yards, climb ladders, racks, shelves, or stairs up to 3 feet.
- Reach: forward/down/up to 36 inches to place merchandise and prepare product; reach up to place signs and banners.
- Operate cash register, scanners, scale, and handle various customer transactions.
- Use intercom/phone system and respond to equipment sounds.
- Read case labels, signs, tags, temperature gauges, invoices, code dates, reports, and chemical warning labels.
Inside work with extreme variations in heat, cold, dust, and humidity from back doors, compressors, cooler/freezer/preparation area.
