Basic
Purpose:
Positions in this job family are assigned responsibility involving the coordination, supervision and direction of a correctional security program in a state adult correctional facility.
Typical Functions:
* Coordinates and supervises or directs correctional security functions and activities at an adult correctional facility; may serve as a shift supervisor with responsibility for all assigned units and functions in a large facility or as the chief of security in a smaller facility.
* May serve as commander of a correctional emergency response team; schedules training exercises and coordinates activities.
* Conducts special investigations, particularly concerning incidents that occur during assigned shifts.
* Coordinates and supervises security, riot and escape procedures, including procedures for inmate counts and searches for escape materials and contraband.
* Prepares daily work schedules for security personnel; prepares and maintains appropriate records concerning employees and residents.
* Conducts inspections of assigned staff at beginning of shift to assure proper attire and fitness for duty; makes periodic inspections of posts to assure that they are properly maintained; prepares administrative reports concerning the operation of the shift.
* Acts as liaison to local law enforcement agencies; provides information and file changes; arranges court appearances.
* Serves as member of the administrative institutional staff; participates in the formulation of institutional policies, rules and regulations.
Level Descriptor:
At this level employees serve as a correctional security lieutenant with primary responsibilities for the security operations on an assigned shift or unit within a minimum security facility or hospital security unit with responsibility for the supervision of first level supervisors who are responsible for individual units or activities on the assigned shift and coordination of all shift functions and operations.
This level may also include supervisors of special units in a medium/maximum security facility such as a central control room, a gun gang crew, the house supervisor of a detention or restrictive housing or mental health unit and similar functions or may serve as the team commander of the Correctional Emergency Response Team.

required at this level include knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques; of staffing patterns and scheduling the distribution of staff and work assignments; of methods and objectives of discipline required for inmates under restraint; of the psychology of inmate behavior; of the use and care of firearms; of proper restraint methods and techniques; of the fundamentals of English usage; of basic math;
and of report writing techniques.
Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships; to follow oral and written instructions; to gather and organize facts and complete clear, concise reports; to quickly evaluate a situation and adopt an effective course of action; to exercise alertness and be able to act quickly in an emergency; to effectively communicate security techniques; to maintain proficiency in firearms; and to assess and manage conflict resolutions within the inmate population.
Education and Experience:
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of three years of experience in correctional or security work for a government agency or private corrections agency and the following statutory requirements of Title 57, O.S. Section 510: a. The minimum age for service shall be twenty (20) years of age. The Director shall have the authority to establish the maximum age for correctional officers entering service and b.
possession of thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university; or possession of a high school diploma acquired from an accredited high school or GED equivalent testing program and graduation from a training course conducted by or approved by the Department and certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training either prior to employment or during the first six (6) months of employment.
Note:
Successful completion of the GED test is based upon standards established by the Oklahoma Department of Education.
