Position: Casual Resource Workers - Balclutha/Gore (Child and Youth support)
Location: Gore

Casual Tamariki and Rangatahi Support Worker (Resource Worker) – Balclutha/Gore, based in Balclutha/Gore. Hourly rate of $26.00. The role involves providing flexible support services to children and young people at risk, supporting their families, and mentoring and supervising their visits at a variety of venues.

About the role

Ideal candidates are strong, assertive individuals who are driven to make a difference to tamariki and rangatahi. The work may involve difficult situations; calm demeanor, patience, and the ability to handle aggressive behaviour and vulgar language are essential.

Responsibilities
  • Transport tamariki and rangatahi for school drop‑offs and pick‑ups, appointments, activities, and respite.
  • Minding tamariki and rangatahi when they are not with their whānau.
  • Monitoring tamaiti who are deemed at risk.
  • Weekend work may be required; occasionally travel may require overnight stays.
  • Support, mentor, and walk alongside tamariki during their journey with us.
  • Assist Social Workers if the need arises.
  • Supervise visits at a variety of venues with parents, whānau and/or siblings, and write observational reports.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Flexibility to work varying hours during the week and weekends, and to changing priorities.
  • Understanding and appreciation of cultural issues and concerns, particularly Tikanga Māori & Pacific Island cultures.
  • Ability to work independently once fully trained.
  • People skills, patience, and the ability to see past what someone might be struggling with, along with empathy for tamariki.
  • Experience with tamariki that may have complex needs (behavioural, ADHD, autism, FASD, etc.).
  • Discretion and the ability to earn the trust of tamariki, rangatahi, and other staff.
  • Demonstrate tolerance and understanding.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt to your audience and prepare accurate and usable reports or incident records.
  • Consistent behaviour and a clear, positive role model, generating confidence and commitment of others through your own ethical conduct.
  • Legal right to work in New Zealand.
  • Hold a clean, current, full driver’s licence.
