School-Based Family Specialist

The School-Based Family Specialist (SBFS) is a vital member of the school community who supports students and families by connecting them to resources that strengthen stability, well-being, and academic success. The SBFS acts as a bridge between Oklahoma Human Services (OKDHS), the school district, and families, promoting communication, coordinating services, and ensuring children have the opportunity to succeed both in school and s role helps families access essential supports such as safety net programs, employment resources, and services that build family protective factors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and assess the needs of referred students and connect them with appropriate school, community, or interagency services.
  • Assist school personnel in identifying signs of abuse or neglect through consultation and training, and serve as a liaison between the school and OKDHS as needed.
  • Conduct home visits and, when appropriate, transport students in accordance with school district guidelines.
  • Provide problem-solving and social work support for students, families, and school staff in complex or high-stress situations.
  • Assist families in securing resources for basic needs such as housing, transportation, and personal care, promoting safety and family stability.
  • Participate in all required school district and OKDHS trainings.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with federal, state, and district regulations.
  • Promote positive community and family engagement through effective communication and participation in school and community events.
  • Follow up with families to ensure ongoing support and identify new or continuing needs.
  • Document activities, referrals, and contacts in OKDHS tracking system promptly and accurately for program reporting.
  • Collect and report data for program evaluation, performance outcomes, and monthly invoicing.

Additional Duties

  • Support the development and coordination of local community resources and partnerships.
  • Participate in school events such as enrollment, open houses, or family nights to promote available services.
  • Provide or coordinate training and informational sessions on OKDHS programs and family support resources.
  • Assist with attendance initiatives, McKinney-Vento/Homeless Liaison responsibilities, or IEP meetings.
  • Provide social-emotional support and mentoring for students as appropriate.
  • Oversee or assist with programs such as school pantries, clothing closets, or backpack food initiatives.
  • Participate in community and school-based teams such as CARE, MDT, or At-Risk/Crisis Teams.
  • Mediate family-school concerns and support prevention or intervention efforts addressing attendance, behavior, or family stressors.
  • Facilitate referrals to external therapeutic or counseling services.
  • Promote job readiness, career development, and family-strengthening opportunities.

Qualifications

Education:

Determined by the school district.

Experience:

Coordinating and implementing social services or educational programs. Working directly with children and families. Utilizing technology and telecommunications effectively.

Knowledge and

Skills:

Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills. Ability to build positive relationships with families, staff, and community partners. Knowledge of community resources and family support systems. Effective organizational and documentation skills. Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality. Reliable transportation required.

Supervision:
The SBFS works under the general supervision of the school district and receives program guidance and support from an OKDHS Program Field Representative.
