Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving mechanical/technical work in the repair and maintenance of automobile, truck, boat, heavy equipment, or other engines or motors and related assemblies, or in the supervision/management of a fleet maintenance or repair facility.

• Perform major and minor preventative maintenance service on state vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems.
• Operate diagnostic tools and computer software.
• Weld and fabricate as needed.
• Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment and inspect and test equipment for safety and proper working order.
• Complete paperwork and assist in writing specifications; maintain workplace inventory; order parts and supplies.
• Explain technical diagnoses and needed repairs to non‑mechanical personnel, employees, and customers, including roadside assistance, towing needs, and rollback services.
• Perform duties as a supervisor as directed and report to work outside of normal hours for emergency operations.
• Supervise a repair facility; review the work of specialists; provide training and assistance in analysis of engine malfunctions and decisions concerning repair or replacement of parts.
• Plan, layout, and direct operations of a repair facility within agency responsibilities; prepare project schedules; consult with engineering and other departments regarding work priorities and equipment availability.
• Perform transportation planning functions; determine existing and future service levels, accruing needs, and relate to projected revenues; coordinate meetings with other units to evaluate fleet and equipment needs.
• Conduct research, investigation, analysis, and reporting for the equipment fleet; make recommendations for purchase, replacement, or reassignment of equipment; write preliminary specifications for equipment.
• Manage and/or develop budgets for an assigned unit, including operating requirements, equipment purchases, parts and supply purchases, and ensure actual expenses remain consistent with the approved budget.

• Technical knowledge of mechanical principles, use of tools and diagnostic equipment for equipment repair, and operation of fleet vehicles.
• Knowledge of personnel regulations, supervisory principles and practices, and occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade.
• Effective communication skills.
• Organizational and project implementation ability.
• Ability to review and draft equipment specifications.
• Data analysis skills concerning fleet management.

At least six years of experience in automobile, truck, light or heavy duty road equipment, combustion engines, or chassis maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of education/training as an Automotive/Diesel Mechanic.

• Valid Oklahoma driver’s license at the time of appointment; some positions may require a valid Oklahoma commercial driver’s license, class A or B with appropriate endorsements.
• Commercial driver’s license, class A, must be obtained within five months for positions with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority.
• Drug test and physical examination requirements as specified by federal regulations (49 CFR parts 40, 382, 391).
• Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) refrigerant certification within 12 months for positions with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
• Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) certification within 12 months for positions with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
• Alternative Fuels certifications within 12 months for certain OMES–Fleet Management positions.
• Safety sensitive status as defined by 63 O.S. §427.8 may apply to some agencies.
