Project Engineer Role Purpose
Project Engineer responsible for executing capital projects in a unionized plant producing xanthan and gellan gum. Duties include identifying and implementing process improvements to increase throughput, improve efficiencies, realize cost savings, and ensure consistent product quality. Manage scope development, design, construction supervision, and support various engineering activities.
Main Responsibilities- Coordinate and supervise design efforts; provide field monitoring to ensure construction compliance with designs.
- Incorporate safety and regulatory compliance into all assigned project scope and design.
- Collaborate with the Plant Leadership Team to develop annual and long‑term capital plans for the site.
- Conduct and participate in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Management of Change (MOC), pre‑start‑up safety reviews, Process Safety Management (PSM) audits, and incident investigations.
- Develop process flow sheets, preliminary plant layouts, and piping and instrument diagrams.
- Perform or direct preparation of process and detailed design calculations as required.
- Review detail design work, drawings, and calculations performed by designers and drafting personnel.
- Select equipment for specific functions and develop specifications for equipment or processes.
- Develop cost estimates, construction schedules, and maintain cost control on projects.
- Prepare bid packages and solicit and evaluate bids from contractors.
- Approve purchase requisitions for equipment and construction activities within authorized limits.
- Establish and maintain project files; enter material into permanent equipment and process files.
- Supervise compilation of process and equipment information and may develop preliminary operating procedures.
- Coordinate, control, and supervise design personnel assigned to projects.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Maintain current knowledge of applicable codes and regulations.
- Protect proprietary information and property from loss.
- Ensure contractor compliance with the site contractor safety policy.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline with demonstrated project engineering experience.
- Minimum of five years of project management experience, preferably in chemical or fermentation industries.
- Ability to liaise with Process Engineering, Maintenance, Management, and Production personnel to provide process specifications for project improvements.
- Project control and accountability until project acceptance by the manufacturing group and meeting all project goals.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access). Working knowledge of SAP is a plus.
- Initiative, coaching and leadership capabilities, problem‑solving skills, innovative thinking, and focus on customer needs.
- Six Sigma or Lean manufacturing experience is a plus.
Competitive salary: $70,000 – $85,000.
