Controller, Accounting, Financial Compliance

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated and dynamic Controller. This is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the financial health, reporting accuracy, and regulatory compliance of a dynamic, multi-entity staffing agency operating across multiple states and federal employer identification numbers (FEINs). This role will manage all core accounting functions, lead the month-end close process, ensure compliance with tax and labor laws across jurisdictions, and support strategic financial planning.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience in multi-entity, multi-state payroll/tax environments, preferably within the staffing or professional services industry, and is comfortable leading a growing accounting team.

• Oversee general ledger integrity, financial reporting, and month-end/year-end closing processes for multiple FEINs and business units.
• Prepare and analyze consolidated financial statements and variance reports for internal and external stakeholders.
• Maintain accurate accounting records in accordance with GAAP and applicable labor/tax laws.

• Ensure compliance with all state and local payroll tax regulations, including withholding, SUTA, and workers’ compensation across multiple jurisdictions.
• Collaborate with payroll and HR to manage accurate processing of internal and field employee payrolls across multiple states and FEINs.
• Monitor and reconcile payroll liabilities, taxes, and benefits for accuracy and compliance.

• Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance.
• Serve as primary contact for audits (financial, workers’ compensation, state tax, etc.).
• Coordinate with external auditors, insurance providers, and tax advisors.
• Manage and develop the accounting team, including AP/AR, payroll accounting, and staff accountants.
• Provide guidance and mentorship while supporting ongoing process improvement initiatives.
• Work cross-functionally with operations, HR, and sales to support business goals and ensure financial alignment.
• Promote a safe work environment and enforce safety policies and procedures.
• Partner with the client on safety training, incident reporting, and follow-ups.
• Assist with internal or client audits as needed.

• Assist in the preparation of annual budgets, rolling forecasts, and cash flow analysis.
• Provide financial insight to support leadership decision-making, client pricing, and margin management.
• Contribute to financial system upgrades and automation initiatives to improve scalability and efficiency.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with 3+ years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role.
• Experience with multi-FEIN, multi-state payroll and tax compliance required.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, payroll tax rules, and financial best practices.
• Experience with accounting software (
  * must have Quick Books & Net Suite experience) and payroll platforms (e.g., PrismHR, ADP, Paylocity).
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Proven leadership ability and attention to detail in high-volume environments.

• Staffing industry or professional services experience strongly preferred.
