About the RoleThe Assistant Infant Teacher plays a vital role in supporting the lead teacher in creating a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for infants. This position focuses on fostering early childhood development through attentive care, age-appropriate activities, and responsive interaction. The Assistant Infant Teacher collaborates closely with the teaching team to implement a Montessori prepared environment that promotes cognitive, emotional, and physical growth.
They are responsible for monitoring infants' health and well-being, ensuring compliance with safety and hygiene standards. Ultimately, this role contributes to laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning and social development in the earliest stages of childhood.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of state-required health and safety training.
- Basic knowledge of infant development and safety practices.
- Current certification in infant/child CPR and first aid.
- Ability to pass background checks and meet state licensing requirements.
- Experience working in an infant classroom.
- Familiarity with developmental milestones of infants.
- Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with families and staff.
- Additional knowledge/training in Montessori and/or certifications in early childhood education or specialized infant care.
- Assist the lead teacher in implementing daily activities that support infant development.
- Provide attentive and individualized care to infants, including feeding, diapering, and comforting.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized classroom environment in accordance with health and safety regulations.
- Observe and document infants’ developmental progress and communicate observations to the teaching team.
- Support positive interactions and relationships between infants, families, and staff members.
The Assistant Infant Teacher uses strong observational skills daily to monitor infants’ developmental milestones and identify individual needs. Effective communication skills are essential for interacting with infants, families, and colleagues to ensure a cohesive and supportive learning environment. Organizational skills help maintain a clean and safe classroom while managing supplies and documentation efficiently. Patience and empathy are critical in responding to infants’ cues and providing comforting care.
Additionally, knowledge of safety protocols and early childhood education principles guide the implementation of developmentally appropriate activities and routines.
