Job Overview:
The Resident Educator (RE) creates a safe and welcoming environment that allows residents to grow both academically and spiritually. The RE also provides guidance, help, and information to students. The title "Educator" represents our philosophy of education in the residence halls and indicates a person who should be able to lead residential activities, keep the confidence of the residents, help them overcome problems in adjustment to campus life, and give guidance relative to interpersonal relationships.

  • Exercise general management of the residence hall by maintaining orderliness and cleanliness, and by responding to needs in the building for repair/improvement.

  • Encourage good study habits and scholastic achievement and see that appropriate conditions for study are provided and maintained.
  • Advise and counsel students within the limits of training and capability on academic, personal, social, and spiritual matters, and make referrals when appropriate. Must be knowledgeable about referral services for students in need of specialized help.
  • Mentor students and develop leaders and "influencers" within the residence hall.
  • Enforce residence hall and University regulations. Carry out necessary judicial action.
  • Respond to and report any emergencies immediately. This includes, but is not limited to, violations of law requiring police assistance, serious illness or injury, and fire.
  • Assist in the selection of Resident Assistants.
  • Oversee and assist RAs to understand and fulfill their duties, including planning meaningful programs for their residents.
  • Attend, assist, and teach during retreats, in-service programs, staff training, and development programs.
  • Be visible in the residence hall(s) and at campus-wide functions.
  • Work in cooperation and on behalf of other departments, such as the Academic Success Center, Student Counseling & Wellness, Cashier's Office, and Admissions.
  • Join with other offices to promote the mission and values of the University to prospective students by participating in and leading programming during MNU Pioneer Days.
  • Agree not to engage in other remunerative employment while under contract in the residence hall. Any exceptions to this must be discussed and approved by the Director of Residential Life.
  • If seeking additional education, agree not to exceed three hours per semester. Any exceptions to this must be discussed and approved by the Director of Residential Life.
