SMT Rework Technician / SMT Operator

The SMT Rework Technician performs precise surface mount technology (SMT) rework, repair, and modification of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) used in navigation aids, surveillance radios, and other electronic products. This role uses specialized soldering, desoldering, and inspection equipment to remove, replace, and repair electronic components while strictly following IPC standards, engineering specifications, and internal quality requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and maintain a clean, well-lit, and ESD-safe workstation, ensuring all tools and equipment are calibrated, functioning properly, and personal protective equipment is in use.
  • Review Bills of Material (BOMs), Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), work instructions, and repair documentation before starting rework activities.
  • Interpret assembly drawings, schematics, component placement diagrams, and rework instructions to determine required repairs or modifications.
  • Inspect printed circuit board assemblies to identify defects, damaged components, soldering issues, or non-conformances requiring rework.
  • Set up and prepare soldering and rework equipment, including soldering irons, hot air stations, desoldering tools, and inspection equipment.
  • Perform SMT rework and repair on PCBAs in accordance with IPC and internal company standards.
  • Remove and replace a wide range of surface mount components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, integrated circuits, connectors, transistors, voltage regulators, and microchips.
  • Carry out precision soldering and desoldering of fine-pitch and high-density electronic components.
  • Use microscopes, magnification equipment, and other inspection tools to verify workmanship and component placement.
  • Repair solder defects including bridges, opens, insufficient solder, lifted leads, and other workmanship-related issues.
  • Verify component orientation, polarity, and placement against engineering documentation and specifications.
  • Perform touch-up soldering and corrective actions on existing assemblies as needed to meet quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of all rework activities and completed repairs.
  • Ensure all reworked assemblies meet defined quality, reliability, and workmanship standards before release.
  • Support production schedules by completing rework assignments efficiently and within required time frames.
  • Conduct visual inspections and verification of completed repairs to confirm compliance with requirements.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Production teams to resolve assembly, reliability, and process-related issues.
  • Provide feedback on recurring defects and suggest opportunities for process and design improvement.
  • Assist with the implementation of Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and product modifications as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support production and quality objectives.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum 18 months of hands-on SMT rework, soldering, or electronic repair experience.
  • At least 6 months of electronic assembly experience.
  • At least 6 months of electrical assembly experience.
  • At least 6 months of wiring harness assembly experience.
  • At least 6 months of experience using small hand tools to build products or parts.
  • Proficiency in SMT and surface-mount technology processes.
  • Ability to perform electronic assembly, cabling, wiring, and electrical assembly tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, assembly drawings, blueprints, and detailed work instructions.
  • Experience working with microscopes, hot air rework stations, soldering irons, and other electronic repair equipment.
  • Ability to perform electrical wiring, basic electrical troubleshooting, and electrical testing on circuits and assemblies.
  • Strong attention to detail and fine motor skills for precision soldering and rework.
  • Ability to follow IPC standards and internal quality procedures.
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Skills & Qualifications
  • IPC-A-610 certification preferred.
  • IPC J-STD-001 certification preferred.
  • Previous experience in electronics manufacturing or electronics repair environment is highly preferred.
  • Experience working with navigation, surveillance, or other complex electronic products is a plus.
  • Strong documentation skills for recording rework activities and repairs.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Engineering, Quality, and Production teams.
  • Willingness to adapt to process changes and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Flexibility to work on different shifts (1st or 2nd shift) as needed.
