General Function

Assists customers with questions, special orders, complaints, and problems. Supervises employees and may be involved in interviewing, disciplinary actions, firing, scheduling, and training. Determines product to purchase, orders product, determines pricing and merchandising.

Reporting Relations

Accountable and reports to:
District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Manager of Health Wellness Home, Store Operations, and Perishables; GM Department Manager.

Positions that Report to You

Full and Part-time General Merchandise Clerks.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner and addresses them by name whenever possible.
  • Assists customers by escorting them to desired products, securing hard-to-reach items, loading or unloading heavy items, and making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests.
  • Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to callers.
  • Works with coworkers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
  • Ensures department standards are met, maintains product knowledge, and stays abreast of new trends.
  • Sets and resets sales area to promote products, prices product following department pricing philosophy.
  • Handles and satisfies customer and vendor issues on a daily basis and assists with inventory.
  • Ensures products are adequately stocked, faced neatly, and the department is clean.
  • Receives, verifies, and accepts merchandise; unloads product, checks product in, verifies accuracy of delivery, and logs invoices as needed.
  • Trains new employees and manages sanitation procedures, ensuring a clean and neat work area and adherence to personal hygiene and dress guidelines.
  • Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines and reports to work on time when scheduled.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Orders product at GM Manager’s discretion.
  • Stocks aisles, evaluates product amount, breaks down pallets, and transports product to the aisle.
  • Assists in other areas of the store as needed.
  • Performs other job‑related duties and special projects as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Instructs, assigns, reviews, and plans the work of others.
  • Maintains standards, coordinates activities, and allocates personnel.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization and interpret instructions.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Ability to file, post, and mail materials; copy data from one record to another; interview to obtain basic information; guide people and provide basic direction.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent and one to three years of similar or related work experience.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly. Must perform climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Visual requirements: vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.

Working

Conditions

Position exposed to dust, noise, equipment movement hazards, and electrical shock. Occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals/solvents. Fast paced work environment.

Equipment Used to Perform Job

Pallet jack, computer, two‑wheeler, forklift, telephone system, copier, fax, and C.A.R.S. system.

Financial Responsibility

Responsible for the cash in the department and for buying merchandise.

Contacts

Daily contact with customers, suppliers/vendors, and the general public. Contact with federal and state governmental or regulatory agencies yearly.

Confidentiality

Has access to confidential information including pricing and sales.
