Position Summary
This position performs a wide range of manual, semi-skilled, and equipment-based tasks in support of the Town’s public works operations. Responsibilities include the maintenance and construction of roads, sidewalks, drainage systems, parks, and municipal facilities, as well as snow and ice control and general labor services.
The position requires the safe operation of light trucks, equipment, and tools, and the ability to perform physical labor in varying weather and field conditions. The employee is expected to work cooperatively with other staff, maintain equipment, and support efficient and effective delivery of public services.
Essential FunctionsThe following duties are representative and not all-inclusive. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
- Performs manual and equipment-assisted work related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of roads, sidewalks, curbs, bridges, and drainage systems, including catch basins, culverts, and ditches.
- Assists with pipe installation, asphalt placement, patching, and distribution of aggregate materials such as sand and gravel.
- Installs and repairs fences, street signs, and guardrails.
- Maintains parks and municipal grounds, including mowing, trimming, brush removal, debris collection, and trash removal.
- Performs roadside mowing and tree trimming or removal operations.
- Conducts snow and ice removal operations, including plowing, shoveling, and application of sand and salt.
- Loads, unloads, and transports materials using hand tools, hand trucks, wheelbarrows, forklifts, and light equipment.
- Performs general labor tasks in support of municipal operations, including assisting other departments with moving equipment or materials.
- Uses a variety of hand tools, power tools, and mechanical equipment safely and effectively.
- Maintains vehicles and equipment by checking fluid levels, performing routine cleaning, and reporting maintenance issues.
- Assists with setup and breakdown for town events and activities.
- Performs minor maintenance and repairs at municipal buildings, including painting and basic carpentry work.
- Follows all safety protocols and participates in maintaining a safe work environment.
- Responds to emergency situations and is available for call-out outside of normal working hours as required.
- Performs related duties as assigned or required to support departmental operations.
- Participates in training and professional development.
- Assists other Town departments to support efficient service delivery.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- At least one (1) year of experience in road construction, maintenance, or related public works activities; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver’s license required and must be maintained throughout employment.
- Safe operation of vehicles and equipment, particularly for snow and ice control.
- Basic road construction, drainage systems, and stormwater maintenance practices.
- Proper use of tools and equipment used in public works operations.
- Grounds and park maintenance practices.
- Workplace safety procedures, including traffic control, hazardous materials handling, and equipment operation.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Perform sustained physical labor under varying environmental conditions.
- Maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
- Operate equipment requiring manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude.
- Comply with established policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Operation of light trucks, snowplows, mowing equipment, and related tools.

The position requires frequent standing and walking throughout the workday, with periodic sitting while operating vehicles or equipment. The employee must regularly use hands and arms to handle, grasp, and operate tools and machinery, and must frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach. Climbing and balancing may be required when working on equipment, slopes, or elevated surfaces.
The role involves continuous physical labor, including digging, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials. The employee must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, and heavier items (up to 100 pounds or more) with assistance as needed.
Driving may be required for extended periods, including long-duration snow removal operations. The position also requires sufficient stamina to work extended hours during emergencies or peak operational periods.
