Crane Rigger

Job Description

Due to continued growth and expansion, Q Crane & Plant Hire Limited is looking for a reliable and experienced Crane Rigger to join our team.

The role will involve assisting with the safe rigging and de-rigging of lattice boom and telescopic crawler cranes at our Oldham depot and at project locations throughout the UK.

The successful candidate will work closely with crane operators, engineers, transport drivers and site teams to ensure cranes are assembled, dismantled and prepared for hire safely and efficiently.

This is a hands-on role that requires a strong commitment to health and safety, the ability to work as part of a team and a flexible approach to working hours and travel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the safe rigging and de-rigging of crawler cranes.
  • Assemble and dismantle main boom, jib and other crane components.
  • Install and remove counterweights, hook blocks, hoist ropes, pendant ropes and safety equipment.
  • Sling, guide and control crane components using approved lifting accessories and tag lines.
  • Assist with loading and unloading crane components from transport vehicles.
  • Inspect crane components, lifting accessories and rigging equipment before use.
  • Report any damage, defects or missing equipment to the relevant supervisor.
  • Follow lift plans, risk assessments, method statements and manufacturer instructions.
  • Establish and maintain suitable exclusion zones during rigging and de-rigging activities.
  • Assist with preparing cranes and equipment for mobilisation to customer sites.
  • Ensure crane components are safely secured and correctly positioned for transport.
  • Maintain good housekeeping within the depot, workshop and site working areas.
  • Work closely with crane operators, engineers, lift supervisors, slinger/signallers and transport personnel.
  • Complete company documentation, inspection records and toolbox talk registers as required.
  • Comply with all company health, safety, environmental and quality procedures.

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have previous experience rigging and de-rigging crawler cranes, mobile cranes or heavy plant.
  • Have a good understanding of lifting operations, crane components and safe slinging practices.
  • Be able to follow lift plans, method statements and verbal instructions.
  • Be physically capable of carrying out a demanding, hands-on role.
  • Be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Be willing to travel and work at locations throughout the UK.
  • Be flexible regarding working hours, including early starts, late finishes and occasional weekend work.
  • Be able to work safely at height where required.
  • Have good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence.

Experience working with Liebherr, Kobelco, Hitachi Sumitomo crawler cranes would be advantageous.

Relevant CPCS qualifications, including Slinger/Signaller, Crane Supervisor, Mobile Crane or Crawler Crane categories, would also be beneficial. Training may be provided for the right candidate.
