Job OverviewThe Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for holistic controls design, developing standards, training documentation, standard work practices, programming, testing, continuous improvement, and coaching team members on electrical controls.
Responsibilities- Design PLC controls / power panels using AutoCAD for panel layout, field device layouts, electrical wiring schematics, and component selection based on supplier recommended specifications.
- Create bill of materials for panel components, field device components, and recommended minimum spares.
- Develop, document, and program PLC applications from scratch using Ladder Logic.
- Create, read, and simulate logic and flow diagrams; perform programming, testing, start‑up, and debugging of systems with documented punch lists and troubleshooting both onsite and remotely.
- Program HMI applications for industrial automation projects using ABB Factory Talk View Studio ME software.
- Develop and implement standard engineering practices, parts sourcing with preferred vendors, standardize components, and provide detailed documentation.
- Develop Scope of Work (SOW), cost estimates internally and externally to provide budget estimates.
- Consult with in‑house operations personnel to troubleshoot electrical/programming issues.
- Provide technical support, problem‑solving, maintenance, modifications, and continuous improvement using best practices for automated controls systems.
- Assist employees and contractors in training, troubleshooting electrical/programming issues remotely and onsite, providing safety, repair and upgrade recommendations.
- Develop specifications and standards for procurement and design of electrical control systems (ECS).
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or equivalent technical school with at least 5 years as a Controls Engineer at the system architect level (may be considered in lieu of a degree).
- Minimum 10 years of experience in controls and automation.
- Onsite office‑based role.
- Experience with Rockwell Studio
5000 and Factory Talk View. - Strong diagnostic ability to identify component‑level root causes.
- Proficiency in commissioning conveyor parcel scanner systems using Sick, Cognex, Keyence, and Datalogic.
- Electrical troubleshooting skills both remotely and onsite.
- Interface experience with Warehouse Control Systems (WCS) and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS).
- Knowledge of industrial control system protocols and networking principles (TCP/IP, Ethernet‑IP, Devicenet, Control‑Net, Profibus, IO‑Link, etc.).
- Experience commissioning line scanners and vision‑based barcode readers.
- Ability to use OEM drawings to integrate controls and safety with existing or new equipment.
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to travel 15 % yearly and up to 25 % as needed.
- Understanding of power distribution, ARC Flash safety, NFPA 7OE, NEC, OSHA standards.
- Experience with at least one other PLC platform (Siemens, Omron, Wago, Beijer, GE, Beckhoff, etc.).
- Proficiency integrating In‑Motion Check weighing systems (Cubiscan, Wipotec, Mettler Toledo).
- Experience with RSLogix
500, Connected Components Workbench, Power Flex series. - Proficient with AUTOCAD LT (required) and AutoCAD Electrical.
- Experience with SCADA/HMI software (Factory Talk View SE, Wonderware, Ignition).
- Background in Electrical and Instrumentation Controls (EIC) in medium to heavy manufacturing or warehouse distribution environments.
- Repetitive bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, twisting, sitting, standing, and walking.
- Lifting parts and tools weighing average 20 lb, occasionally up to 80 lb.
- Dexterity in eye/hand coordination and wrist motion (repetitive flexion/rotation).
- Work in small spaces, dust, fumes/odors, hot/cold temperatures, noise, vibration, standing on concrete for long periods, wet or uneven surfaces.
