Summary

The School Transportation Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, servicing, and maintaining the school district's fleet of school buses, activity buses, service vehicles, and related transportation equipment. The mechanic ensures all vehicles operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with federal, state, and district requirements. This position works collaboratively with the Director of Transportation to minimize fleet downtime, maintain preventive maintenance schedules, and provide safe transportation for students.

  • Certified and experienced diesel/auto mechanic
  • Three years of heavy-duty diesel or school bus repair experience. (Preferred)
  • Valid Mississippi driver's license.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements, or ability to obtain within district-established timeframe.
  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications preferred
  • Knowledge of state and federal specifications
  • Experience using computerized diagnostic equipment (Preferred)
  • Inspect school buses and district vehicles to ensure safe operating condition.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance according to district and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic system failures.
  • Repair diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, brake systems, HVAC, electrical, fuel, cooling, and exhaust systems.
  • Perform state-required inspections and repairs.
  • Ensure buses are safe before returning them to service.
  • Perform oil changes, lubrication, fluid checks, filter replacements, and tire service.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and an inventory of repair parts and supplies.
  • Complete work orders, maintenance records, and inspection reports accurately.
  • Assist with ordering parts and warranty documentation.
  • Respond to roadside mechanical breakdowns and emergency repairs as needed.
  • Comply with OSHA, Mississippi Department of Education, and district safety requirements.
  • Communicate repair needs with the Director of Transportation and bus drivers.
  • Participate in required technical and safety training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
