Under the general direction of the Road Department Supervisor, this role serves as a countywide road worker.

Primary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Understand equipment and its operation.
  • Work with supervisors to schedule work and maintain quality.
  • Maintain the truck and equipment, including (but not limited to):
    • Check all lights and replace bulbs or sealed beams as needed.
    • Check tires, maintain correct tire pressure, change tires and fix flats.
    • Grease the truck and change oil.
    • Maintain and replace all mud flaps.
    • Repair and replace mirrors.
    • Replace wiper blades.
    • Clean and maintain batteries.
    • Change the cutting edges on the underbody scraper and repair all loose or broken bolts and lock pins on the underbody scraper.
    • Install, remove, and maintain the salt spreader.
    • Install and remove pea‑gravel hitches.
    • Replace all snow plow shoes and blades on snow plows.
    • Check, maintain, and change the oil, fuel, air, hydraulic, and water filters.
    • Complete vehicle condition reports accurately and timely.
    • Clean to insure asphalt is removed.
  • Assist the mechanic or welder with repair of other items related to the truck or equipment as necessary.
  • Load the truck if necessary.
  • Refuel trucks at the start and end of each shift.
  • Maintain and keep trucks, equipment, and parking stall clean.
  • Complete daily vehicle condition reports detailing the condition of the vehicle and turn it in with your timecard to your supervisor.
  • Salt and/or sand roads and bridges.
  • Plow snow off roads and bridges.
  • Scrape and grade gravel roads.
  • Dump and spread material.
  • Grade shoulders.
  • Cut trees and trim brush.
  • Fill potholes.
  • Hand rake material.
  • Install guard rails, culverts, signs, etc.
  • Pick up trash and dead animals.
  • Cut grass.
  • Clean culverts.
  • Install underground pipes.
  • Dig trenches to let water off the road.
  • Work together with others.
  • Work alone.
  • Drive on snow and ice‑covered roads.
  • Assist in emergency situations.
  • Attend meetings.
  • Abide by all MIOSHA and Calhoun County Road Department safety rules.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and maintain positive public relations.
  • Perform general labor.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • The job requires, as a minimum, the completion of a standard high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid Michigan Operators License, CDL, Class B with Air Brakes and no automatic‑only restriction (Class A preferred), and DOT Physical Card is required.
  • Two years of driving experience – heavy equipment and snow plowing preferred.
Working Conditions

Hybrid Work Classification:
On‑Site Required.

Flexibility Classification:
Fixed Schedule.

Wage Range

$26.69 - $28.89 USD.
