Summary

The Director of Transportation provides leadership and oversight for all district transportation services to ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation of students. The Director is responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, evaluating, and improving transportation operations, including personnel, budgeting, routing, fleet management, safety, compliance, and customer service. This position emphasizes administrative leadership rather than mechanical repair.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Educational Leadership, Business Administration, Public Administration, Transportation Management, Logistics, or a related field.
  • Equivalent administrative experience may be considered.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible transportation or operations management experience.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience in budgeting, personnel management, and large operational systems.
  • Preferred

    Certifications:

    School Bus Safety Training, FEMAICS 100, 200, and 700, CPR/First Aid (preferred)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Direct and supervise daily transportation operations.
  • Develop departmental goals, procedures, and operating standards.
  • Prepare reports for district leadership and the Board.
  • Maintain departmental records and documentation.
  • Coordinate transportation services for all district programs.
  • Evaluate department performance and implement improvements.
  • Recruit, interview, recommend, supervise, and evaluate transportation employees.
  • Coordinate employee schedules and leave.
  • Address performance concerns using progressive discipline.
  • Promote professional development and positive employee relations.
  • Develop succession plans within the department.
  • Oversee bus routing and scheduling.
  • Coordinate transportation for regular education, special education, CTE, athletics, field trips, extracurricular activities, and summer programs.
  • Develop contingency plans for weather and emergencies.
  • Monitor on-time performance and route efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and district transportation regulations.
  • Coordinate driver certification and required training.
  • Oversee bus evacuation drills and accident investigations.
  • Ensure buses meet inspection requirements.
  • Coordinate state transportation audits.
  • Develop fleet replacement schedules.
  • Monitor fleet condition and maintenance records.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance with the shop foreman or lead mechanic.
  • Monitor fuel usage and fleet availability.
  • Recommend vehicle purchases.
  • Develop and manage the department budget.
  • Monitor expenditures and approve purchases.
  • Manage transportation contracts.
  • Prepare budget projections and state reimbursement reports.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Respond to parent concerns and transportation complaints.
  • Communicate effectively with principals and district leadership.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement and emergency responders.
  • Provide transportation updates during emergencies.
  • Oversee routing software and GPS systems.
  • Maintain transportation databases.
  • Analyze transportation data and prepare reports.
  • Develop emergency transportation procedures.
  • Coordinate transportation during emergencies and evacuations.
  • Participate in district emergency planning.
