Overview

The Medical Surgical staff nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN) who uses the nursing process to provide nursing care to patients receiving therapies within the multidisciplinary activities of the M/S Unit. The RN supervises work assignments of the nursing assistants and is responsible to the Nurse Manager. The RN will provide professional nursing care for all patients of the unit according to the established standards, practices and philosophies of Carle Richland Memorial Hospital (CRMH).

Qualifications
  • Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA)
  • College Diploma in Nursing
  • Work experience in a medical surgical environment preferred
Responsibilities
  • Performs all responsibilities and duties required by the unit as specific to the scope of service.
  • Implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice.
  • Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided.
  • Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care.
  • Implements plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures.
  • Modifies plan of care based upon continuous evaluation.
  • Acts responsibly for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents.
  • Communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues.
  • Provides constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers.
  • Initiates learning opportunities and takes the initiative to begin appropriate solutions.
  • Fulfills all departmental competency requirements.
  • Performs or assists with therapies utilizing proper techniques: IV Access (Peripheral), IV Access (Central Line, PICC, and/or Infusaport), IM/SQ Injections across all age groups.
  • Skilled in setting up and assisting with unit procedures, equipment, and therapies such as Chest Tube Insertion, Sequential Compression Device, Blood Glucose Monitor, PCA Machine, Thoracentesis and Paracentesis, TPN, Thrombolytic Therapy, Kangaroo Pump, Central Line Insertion.
  • Responds to emergency situations and functions as an effective team member across patient age groups.
  • Focuses on patient satisfaction utilizing patient white boards, patient rounding, and bedside reporting.
  • Demonstrates competency in the delivery of care by reviewing, transcribing, and implementing orders in a timely manner.
  • Receives patient Bedside Shift Report from an RN at the beginning of each shift and ensures patient input and patient communication board updates.
  • Delegates patient care tasks/responsibilities to assigned HCTs and validates completion throughout the shift.
  • Completes and documents basic RN patient care activities including assessments, vital signs, physician order completion, admissions/discharges, hourly rounding, care plan documentation, and patient education.
  • Provides patient medications utilizing the patient 5 Rights:
    Right Patient, Right Medication, Right Route, Right Dose, and Right Time.
  • Maintains patient safety as the highest priority level and ensures compliance with safety measures.
  • Maintains a positive attitude to promote a healthy work environment and a healing patient environment.
  • Ensures prompt answering of patient call lights to facilitate triage and completion of patient requests.
  • Uses critical thinking to evaluate overall patient condition and applies nursing judgment to identify and act on changes in patient status.
  • Effectively communicates within the healthcare team to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and patient safety.
Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $30.29 per hour - $52.10 per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
