Scheduling Details: 1, 12hr shift 6 wks. 6:00 am - 6:30 pm OR 6:00 pm - 6:30 am

The Medical Surgical staff nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN) who uses the nursing process to provide nursing care to patients receiving therapies within the multidisciplinary activities of the M/S Unit. The RN supervises work assignments of the nursing assistants and is responsible to the Nurse Manager. The RN will provide professional nursing care for all patients of the unit according to the established standards, practices and philosophies of Carle Richland Memorial Hospital (CRMH).

• Certified Registered Professional Nurse (RN) licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days, American Heart Association (AHA)
• College diploma in Nursing
• Relevant work experience in a medical-surgical setting

• Performs all responsibilities and duties required by the unit specific to the scope of service.
• Implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice.
• Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided.
• Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards based on patient and family needs.
• Implements plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures.
• Modifies plan of care based upon continuous evaluation.
• Takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and correcting safety hazards and incidents.
• Communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues.
• Offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers and confers with colleagues to expand knowledge base.
• Identifies personal learning needs and takes initiative to begin appropriate solutions.
• Fulfills all departmental competency requirements.
• Assists with therapies: IV access (peripheral, central line, PICC, Infusaport), IM and SQ injections (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric).
• Assists with unit procedures and equipment: chest tube insertion and management, sequential compression device, blood glucose monitor, PCA machine, thoracentesis and paracentesis, TPN, thrombolytic therapy, kangaroo pump, central line insertion.
• Responds to emergency situations and functions as an effective team member across age groups.
• Focuses on patient satisfaction through patient white boards, rounding, and bedside reporting.
• Reviews, transcribes, and implements orders in a timely manner, communicating responses while involving patient, family, and significant others in decision-making.
• Receives bedside shift report from an RN at the start of each shift, ensuring inclusion of patient input, visual validation of safe environment, and updating patient communication board.
• Delegates patient care tasks and validates completion throughout the shift.
• Completes and documents basic RN patient care activities, including assessments, vital signs interpretation, physician order completion, admission/discharge, hourly rounding, care plan documentation, and patient education.
• Administers medication using the five rights: right patient, right medication, right route, right dose, and right time.
• Maintains patient safety as priority, ensuring compliance with fall precautions, pressure ulcer prevention, isolation precautions, and ambulation safety.
• Maintains a positive attitude promoting a healthy work environment and healing patient environment.
• Responds promptly to patient call lights to ensure effective triage and completion of requests.
• Uses critical thinking to evaluate overall patient condition and nursing judgment to identify and act on changes in status.
• Effectively communicates within the healthcare team to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and patient safety.
