Excise Tax Examiner 2 (In-Training)

Within our Audit division's Account Research and Desk Examination (ARDE) unit, we are excited to announce an opportunity for an Excise Tax Examiner 2 (in-training).

As an Excise Tax Examiner 2 (ETE2) in the Audit division and a member of the Account Research and Desk Examination (ARDE) Unit, you will perform and resolve a full range of financial examinations. Your verification of business accounts, tax returns, audit reports and other activity records will be used to validate correct tax liability. You will also support the taxpayer or their representative regarding proper reporting and compliance with tax laws and policies.
Here are some other responsibilities:
- Work with unregistered businesses who voluntarily register to pay prior tax obligations.
- Assess the tax reporting responsibility of unregistered business leads.
- Perform pre-audit planning activities.
- Provide technical support to department staff.
- Monitor mission critical tax reporting systems to ensure account integrity and data accuracy.
- Continually monitor the department's tax accounting systems for weaknesses and effectiveness.
- Assist field audit personnel in research activities.
Depending on experience level, the successful candidate may be hired as an Excise Tax Examiner 2 In-training, or as an Excise Tax Examiner 2.
The required qualifications are key competencies that have been successfully demonstrated through experience or education. To join our team, you must possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies:
Demonstrated progressive experience performing examinations of business records, tax returns, and/or accounting systems to determine compliance with laws gained through prior work in accounting, tax administration, auditing, or financial analysis.
Proven ability to research, interpret, and apply rules and regulations accurately, demonstrated through experience identifying discrepancies and resolving issues in regulatory, tax, or compliance-focused environments.
Demonstrated skill in analyzing and synthesizing large volumes of datausing intermediate analytical methods, supported by experience identifying discrepancies, assessing reporting inaccuracies, and drawing logical, data driven conclusions.
Progressive experience providing technical assistance and educationto stakeholders, demonstrated through prior roles explaining reporting obligations or regulatory requirements in clear, understandable terms.
Proven ability to use technology and mission critical systems—including spreadsheets, databases, and electronic records systems—to conduct examinations, document findings, and maintain accurate information, gained through prior experience working with operational or analytical business systems in a regulatory, financial, or administrative environment.
