Status: Part-time
Hours: Up to 25 hours per week (maximum); hours may vary based on the operational needs of the library
Pay Rate: $21.00 per hour

Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Library Director and Assistant Director
, the Public Service Assistant serves as a front-line clerk at the public service desk, providing high-quality customer service to library patrons. This position requires some evening and Saturday hours and plays a key role in daily library operations, technology assistance, and community engagement.

Essential Functions

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides direct customer service to library patrons, including welcoming visitors, registering new patrons, and managing patron accounts.
  • Assists with opening and closing the library on a rotating basis.
  • Checks library materials in and out using the library management system.
  • Collects fines and fees in accordance with library policy.
  • Renews materials and places item holds.
  • Supports basic library operations and daily workflows.
  • Assists patrons with basic research questions,
    technology support
    , and computer use.
  • Demonstrates advanced computer skills
    , including effective use of common software, online tools, and library systems.
  • Creates and maintains displays, shelving, and performs basic collection maintenance.
Peripheral Functions
  • Assists with outreach, programs, and other library initiatives under the supervision of the Library Director and Assistant Director
    .
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Library Director or Assistant Director
    .

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic principles, practices, and procedures of public library service.
  • Basic knowledge of technical support
    , including troubleshooting common computer and technology issues.
  • Advanced proficiency in computer use
    , including office software, internet tools, and digital platforms.
  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to assist patrons in locating information and materials.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a busy public service environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect patron privacy.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with patrons, coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new systems and procedures.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience with graphic design, outreach, public-facing programs, or technology support preferred.
Working Conditions

This position is classified as FLSA non-exempt
. Work is generally performed on a regularly scheduled basis for up to 25 hours per week
, depending on library needs. The position requires flexibility, including weekend hours, and may involve occasional presentations to schools and community groups, as well as attendance at meetings, workshops, conferences, or other assignments.
