Legal Office Assistant

The Attorney General's Office is recruiting for a non-permanent full time Legal Office Assistant in the Ecology Division (expected duration approximately 9 months). This position is located in Olympia, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). Legal Office Assistant Salary range 40: $42,972 - $57,252 (Effective 7/1/2025) | $43,836 - $58,392 Annually (Effective 7/1/2026) The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

The following stipends may apply based on position requirements:
Incumbents assigned to a position designated as requiring dual language skills will receive a 5% Dual Language Requirement Pay stipend.

About the Ecology Division The Ecology Division of the Attorney General's Office is comprised of 30 attorneys and 12 professional staff. The division represents the Department of Ecology, Puget Sound Partnership, State Conservation Commission, Pollution Liability Insurance Agency, and the Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council. The division works to resolve environmental problems and disputes using a variety of legal tools, including negotiation, multi-party mediation and litigation, when necessary.

Division attorneys provide advice on a broad spectrum of matters, including permitting, legislation, rule making, and enforcement. The division's practice includes hearings before administrative boards, as well as trials and appeals before state and federal courts. The work is interesting and varied, and includes some high profile and long running cases. The ideal temporary Legal Office Assistant candidate would enjoy fast-paced work in a collegial team atmosphere.

Duties and Essential Functions of a Legal Office Assistant The Legal Office Assistant processes all incoming mail, independently identifying where to save documents using the division's file naming conventions, and then distributes mail to appropriate staff. The Legal Office Assistant is responsible for opening all new matters, and handles closing and archiving of closed matters. The Legal Office Assistant independently drafts new case opening documents using established templates.

Additionally, the Legal Office Assistant is responsible for arranging travel and processing travel reimbursements, preparing outgoing mail, updating division staffing lists, assists with processing invoices for payment, and ordering and tracking equipment and supplies for the division. This is an essential position within the division, providing support to all members–professional staff and attorneys.

Qualifications Option 1:
High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience including a minimum of six months of experience in a legal office environment. Option 2:
