Construction & Maintenance Project Lead – SW Region
Location:
Olympia, WA
Work Schedule:
Four (4) days a week, 10 hours per day, core hours 6 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday. Position requires regular travel, including overnight stays, between parks and statewide for meetings, training and field work.
Role
Summary:
The Construction & Maintenance Lead plans, coordinates and organizes construction and maintenance projects for the Southwest Region. The role leads two or more journey‑level trade employees and uses knowledge, experience and training in electrical, carpentry, plumbing, welding, masonry, mechanics and project planning to complete preventative and deferred maintenance projects.
- Serve as lead, directing work of two or more journey‑level trade employees and work crews assigned to construction and maintenance projects.
- Coordinate projects, lead, direct and train work crews and park staff in construction and maintenance projects.
- Perform journey‑level work in carpentry, masonry, roofing, plumbing, electrical, welding and equipment operations.
- Lead planning of preventative and deferred maintenance projects including estimating materials, equipment and workforce.
- Inspect work to ensure quality and compliance.
- Plan, propose (including permitting and budgeting) and provide written documents for projects.
- Recommend maintenance work and consult with supervisor.
- Handle emergency water and wastewater system repairs and emergency repairs of other specialized systems or areas such as swamps, tidal areas or historic areas.
- Respond to and repair area park maintenance related emergencies and urgencies.
- Ensure adherence to safety rules, precautions and equipment protocols.
- Two (2) years as a Construction & Maintenance Project Specialist.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Valid unrestricted (except corrective lenses) driver's license.
- Class A CDL with tanker endorsement obtained within 12 months of employment.
- First Aid & CPR certification obtained within 12 months of employment.
- Six (6) years of advanced level experience in two or more of the construction or building trades (building maintenance, repair, remodeling, construction, mechanical/machinery).
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Valid unrestricted (except corrective lenses) driver's license.
- Class A CDL with tanker endorsement obtained within 12 months of employment.
- First Aid & CPR certification obtained within 12 months of employment.
- Two (2) years of technical or vocational training or education in building/construction trade may substitute for up to two (2) years of experience.
- Experience working for Washington State Parks or a similar parks and recreation entity.
- Advanced level experience driving and operating a variety of vehicles and light to heavy equipment.
- Advanced knowledge of regular and specialized hand and power tools.
- Advanced technical knowledge in construction, installation, and problem solving for agency facilities, sites, and systems.
- Experience reading and understanding schematics and blueprints.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products such as Word, Outlook, Excel.
- Advanced project management experience coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, vendors and contracts, including planning, purchasing and completion of tasks.
- Intermediate knowledge and application of building codes governing safety, repair, maintenance and construction of facilities.
- Experience organizing and leading employees to complete work projects with time management, multi‑tasking and communication.
- Project Planning & Execution – ability to plan, coordinate, schedule and deliver construction and maintenance projects from initiation to completion.
- Technical Expertise in Multi‑Trade Construction & Maintenance – demonstrated knowledge and hands‑on proficiency across multiple trades.
- Leadership & Crew Coordination – ability to lead, direct, assign tasks, develop methods and ensure productivity while fostering collaboration.
- Regulatory Compliance & Safety Management – knowledge of building codes, safety regulations and risk management practices to ensure compliance and safety culture.
