Position SummaryThe teacher is primarily responsible for effective teaching and learning of the assigned subject(s) following district approved curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices. The teacher may teach in a variety of elementary and/or secondary educational settings, including Life Skills, Behavior Development, Structured Communications, and Learning Resource/Support. Primary responsibilities include student safety, collaboration, and attention to each student’s readiness to learn, including guidance, discipline, and welfare.
The district serves a diverse community (approximately 40% students from diverse backgrounds) and seeks an individual who has experience working with culturally diverse families and communities and demonstrates a commitment to strengthening community engagement and communication.
- Plan for student success based on assessed needs, data, and information to set learning goals and assess progress using district approved assessment tools.
- Collaborate in a professional learning community with other teachers, support staff, multidisciplinary teams, and others to address student needs and develop effective teaching practices.
- Conduct lesson planning consistent with school/district approved curriculum and instructional practice, using research‑based instructional strategies.
- Maintain grading and evaluation consistent with policy, and communicate results to students and parents, including electronic grade system posting.
- Integrate district approved technology into planning, learning, progress reporting, and record‑keeping, including IEP preparation.
- Create and maintain classroom management practices that engage students and enforce discipline procedures.
- Participate in faculty, grade level, department, and curriculum meetings; assist in building efforts and support the school vision.
- Monitor student safety, including early intervention for bullying, harassment, depression, or academic failure, and report concerns to appropriate staff.
- Supervise students during school activities and events, intervening as needed and ensuring a safe environment.
- Plan reflection time on professional practice, establish a growth plan, and review annually with the administrator.
- Follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Use varied educational/developmental assessment instruments, including Woodcock‑Johnson tools.
- Experience working with culturally diverse families and communities.
- Successful completion of a teacher certification program and valid Washington state certification(s) and/or endorsement(s).
- Commitment to meet highly qualified criteria, including praxis requirements.
- Teaching experience or potential to teach effectively in a special education environment, with knowledge of IDEA and 504 procedures.
- Strong communication skills with parents, students, and staff.
- Collaboration, teaming, and participation in a professional learning community.
- Classroom management skills to achieve acceptable student behavior.
- Knowledge of assessment, instruction, and evaluation techniques.
- Understanding of child and adolescent development for curriculum selection.
- Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching and learning.
- Technology proficiency to aid instruction, assessment, and learning.
- Evidence of continuous professional learning and commitment to growth opportunities.
- VOICE Program: Conduct vocational interest and aptitude assessments; implement academic, physical, self‑help, leisure/recreation, social/emotional and pre‑vocational programs; coordinate community based work and travel programs; collaborate with adult service providers.
- Early Intervention Program: Participate in transition activities between early interventions and pre‑school placements; develop Individual Family Service Plans; provide direct or consultative services to assist parents with behavioral, adaptive, and communication needs.
