This is a full-time, overtime eligible, project position on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College. This cyclic project position works full-time September through July (August off) with benefits paid year-round, is grant funded through August 31, 2027, and is dependent on continued federal funding. This position is exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules.

Position

Purpose:

Under the supervision of the Director of Upward Bound Shelton, this position is responsible for advising a caseload of students and coordinating the after-school program at Shelton High School. This position is responsible for promoting high school academic achievement and post-secondary success for program participants. These responsibilities require a student-centered approach, strong organizational abilities and collaboration. Coordination with other programs and organizations like non-profits, colleges, universities, businesses, community-based organizations, social service agencies and other Evergreen offices to enhance participant opportunities is desired.

The position requires commuting between work sites including Evergreen, schools, agencies, and events.

The Evergreen State College Upward Bound is an educational enrichment program that promotes high school achievement and participation in post-secondary education among low-income, first-generation-to-college high school students. The program serves students from various backgrounds. The Evergreen State College Upward Bound Program has served communities in Western Washington since 1977. The Shelton High School Upward Bound program serves 63 participants in grades 9-12.

The program is a 100% federally funded grant project with the U.S. Department of Education, and all positions and activities are dependent upon continued grant funding.

Nature and Scope:
The position is responsible for recruiting, advising, and supporting participants in the Upward Bound program, with a focus on promoting academic success and college readiness for low-income and first-generation students. The position involves coordinating program activities, monitoring student progress, and collaborating with school personnel, families, and community partners. The incumbent also assists with data collection, reporting, and special events, ensuring compliance with federal grant requirements.

This role requires engagement in after-school, evening, weekend, and summer programming, including field trips, workshops, and residential activities.

• Recruit and enroll eligible participants, including conducting informational meetings, reviewing applications, and verifying eligibility.
• Advise and champion for students needs individually and in groups on academic success strategies, college admissions, financial aid, career planning, and post-secondary transition.
• Monitor and track 12th-grade participants to ensure successful college enrollment and persistence, extending support through their higher education journey.
• Meet with parents and guardians to intake program participants, discuss student progress, implement strategies for student success, and complete the FAFSA.
• Assess student needs, develop individualized action plans, and provide academic interventions.
• Refer students and families to social, health, and community resources as needed.
