Seeking a hard-working field technician with a passion for geology to join our growing company. We tackle a variety of complex engineering-related projects across the Northwest, you can expect variety in your work.

As a field technician, you will have the opportunity to work outdoors throughout the year, in rugged and sometimes remote field locations. Our work focuses on the engineering geology and geotechnical engineering aspects of residential and commercial development.

This position requires frequent and intense physical labor. To be successful, you should have an inquisitive and can-do mentality, proactiveness, self-motivation, clear written and verbal communication, and an interest in geology.

Job Description

This position will fulfill the normal duties that would be performed by a field technician at a typical geotechnical engineering consulting firm. This includes duties such as, but not limited to: site reconnaissance, field exploration excavation and logging of borings and test pits, infiltration testing, construction inspection, instrumentation installation and monitoring, equipment maintenance, and sample disposal. The employee will not be set up for failure during this process of skill development.

Proper training, mentoring, and work experience will be given to the employee to ensure a high likelihood of success. In general, the job duties identified below are in approximately the order that they are likely to be performed with work experience over time.

Essential Job Functions

The following are considered to be the basic essential job function requirements of the position.

  • Possession of a Washington State Driver's License.
  • A reliable form of transportation that can be used for hauling equipment.
  • Ability to traverse uneven, rough, muddy, slippery, steep, and brush-covered terrain. If travel on slopes over 45 degrees is necessary, rope training will be provided.
  • Ability to lift equipment and supplies weighing at least 75 lbs without outside assistance.
  • Ability to transport and operate, or learn how to transport and operate, hand-operated and small field equipment that does not require a commercial driver's license to transport. Examples include gas-powered augers, portable and semi-portable drills, pneumatic hammer drills (jackhammers), and mini excavators and tractors with auger or bucket attachments over flat or gently sloped terrain.
  • Communicate effectively with peers and customers.
  • Proficiency in the use of a personal computer and the ability to readily learn how to use available software programs for developing figures and spreadsheets, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Drive.
  • The employee must be able to review their own work for accuracy and correctness for preparation of review by their supervisor, as well as review the work of others.
  • The employee must be able to perform multiple concurrent tasks and duties.

Use of your personal vehicle will be required for travel to and from job sites. You will be reimbursed for miles driven in your personal vehicle.

Required Qualifications
  • This position requires a high school diploma.
  • Must be able to travel long distances and accommodate occasional overnight travel. Travel is often in the greater Puget Sound area and central Washington.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license to be able to operate cars, vans, and pickup trucks in various weather conditions and after dark.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in operating heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, and water buffalos.
  • A BA or BS degree, or higher degree, with focused course work in geology or a related field with a strong interest in engineering geology.
  • Currently hold, or have the qualifications to obtain, a Geologist-in-Training (GIT).
  • Experience with and/or coursework focused on engineering geology. Internships or field camps will qualify as applicable experience.
Job Duties
