Correctional Industries is dedicated to maintaining and expanding incarcerated work training programs that build marketable skills, foster strong work ethics, and reduce the overall tax burden of the Department of Corrections. Through meaningful work and hands‑on training, these programs support successful reentry while keeping critical facility operations running safely and efficiently.

Role Overview

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator 2 is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the well system and water distribution system on McNeil Island while also providing support in the wastewater treatment area. This role ensures that all water and wastewater operations meet federal and state regulatory requirements, including compliance with RCW, WAC, Department of Health and Department of Ecology standards, as well as applicable Department of Corrections policies.

Accuracy, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety and environmental stewardship are essential to this work.

In addition to system operations, this position plays a key role in training and supervising incarcerated workers in the maintenance of water equipment and related plant operations. The candidate of choice will inspect the well house and water distribution systems, perform or recommend necessary maintenance, and ensure equipment is operating effectively. Chemical testing is conducted in accordance with Department of Health requirements, with results analyzed and used to make appropriate operational adjustments.

Required Qualifications
  • Valid Washington State Certificate of Competency issued by the Department of Health as a Water Treatment Plant Operator 1 or higher
  • Valid Washington State Certificate of Competency issued by the Department of Health as a Water Distribution Manager 1 or higher
  • Certification by Department of Ecology as a Group 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
  • Valid Washington driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to perform Chemical tests, analyze results, and make appropriate adjustments to the water treatment system
  • Computer skills with experience in Word and Excel
  • Demonstrated organization and time‑management skills; strong interpersonal, communication and analytical skills
  • Maintains the highest standards of personal/professional ethical conduct; ability to apply negotiation and conflict‑resolution skills
  • Effective communication with management, peers, offenders and the public as required to carry out duties
