Water Resources Infrastructure Mapping Specialist
Salary: $5,959 - $7,926 monthly.
Thurston County Public Works is recruiting for a Water Resources Infrastructure Mapping Specialist to create and maintain stormwater, water, and sewer infrastructure mapping. The successful candidate will regularly update existing map layers, maintain an inventory of infrastructure facilities and configurations through GPS-based field data collection, and translate data received in various formats from other departments or third parties. The role also involves working with team members on spill response, CCTV truck operations, and various utility tasks.
EssentialFunctions
- Enter data, maintain ESRI databases, prepare regulatory reports, and assist in data analysis. Develop stormwater, water, and sewer infrastructure maps in GIS layers and provide regular updates through versioned edits in ESRI ArcMAP or ArcPRO.
- Locate and inspect stormwater infrastructure using tools such as Closed‑Caption Television cameras, push cameras, locating equipment, GIS‑grade GPS units, and asset management software.
- Respond to unanticipated emergency situations and participate in an after‑hours pager rotation.
- Exercise skill and judgment in dealing tactfully with the public and community groups, responding to customers’ questions and complaints, and maintaining excellent public relations.
- Work Environment – Combination of in‑office setting (primarily sitting or standing at a desk) and field work throughout Thurston County.
- Travel – Occasional travel to attend meetings or trainings and to perform inspections at worksite locations.
- Customer Interactions – Frequent interactions with Thurston County staff and the public.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental sciences, engineering, planning, or a closely related field and four years of experience working in water resources, environmental issues, or a comparable field.
- Ability to utilize a personal computer with related software to perform essential functions.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
- Required certifications (obtained within the first year, with employer support) – Pipeline Assessment Condition Program/Manhole Assessment Condition Program (PACP/MACP), Certified Erosion Sediment Control Lead (CESCL), Traffic Control/Flagging, and/or Confined Space certification.
- Read and understand construction plans.
- Knowledge of Python, SQL, VBScript, and other developing scripting languages.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Knowledge of stormwater construction, maintenance, and repair techniques.
- Experience with illicit discharge detection.
- Research skills for various records, plans, and documents.
- Understanding of AutoCAD.
- GIS training or certification.
- Knowledge of ESRI ArcMAP, ArcGIS Pro, GPS Trimble Pathfinder Office, and Terra Sync.
