Overview
The City of Tumwater is growing and seeks an Engineer I to join our Transportation & Engineering team. This entry‑level position focuses on transportation and utility infrastructure design, working under experienced engineers with a clear path for growth and advancement.
Responsibilities- Design and review transportation and utility infrastructure projects across the city.
- Develop plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates.
- Review engineering documents for cross‑departmental support and assist private development projects with engineering reviews.
- Assist in right‑of‑way and easement acquisition and prepare environmental plans and reports.
- Utilize AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other engineering software for design documentation.
- Manage selected consulting engineers: selection, preparation and review of Statements of Qualifications, negotiation of design contracts, and review of completed work.
- Prepare funding documentation, preliminary and planning‑level funding documents, grant application support, and coordinate FHWA‑funded project compliance.
- Assist construction administration, perform field inspections, apply applicable standards, and oversee quality and compliance.
- Present technical information to staff, developers, the public, and City Council; prepare recommendations and reports for committees.
- Participate in team meetings; contribute to process improvements and standard design/policy updates.
- Mentor and possibly supervise lower‑level engineers and technicians as skills develop.
- Strong knowledge of modern methods and techniques for public works design, construction, and inspection.
- Understanding of engineering and land surveying methods.
- Basic knowledge of state and federal regulations governing public works projects.
- Ability to delegate tasks, handle public interactions effectively, and organize work priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred QualificationsEngineer in Training (EIT) certificate or ability to obtain within one year of hire; working knowledge of APWA and WSDOT design standards; proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, vehicle tracking software, AGI
32, and WWHM.
Valid Washington State driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
