The salary listed does not include a 2% general wage increase effective July 1, 2026.

About the opportunityAs a Stationary Engineer 2, you will be responsible for the day‑to‑day operations of the Powerhouse, ensuring the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of high‑pressure steam boilers, central steam distribution systems, and commercial refrigeration equipment. Your work will involve performing preventative maintenance on critical water treatment systems, including cooling towers and chilled water loops, as well as fabricating, installing, and analyzing complex electrical, electronic, and pneumatic climate control systems.
Additionally, you will support auxiliary components like air handlers, dampers, and bearings, while serving as the primary contact to receive, prioritize, and dispatch after‑hours non‑emergency service requests for Thurston County DES facilities.
- Operates and maintains the high-pressure steam heating plant, stationary boilers, chillers, and auxiliary equipment to deliver steam, hot water, and chilled water to 13 Capitol Campus buildings.
- Utilizes the Metasys central control system to adjust campus steam and chilled water systems and manage the proper operation of the Capitol Lake Dam.
- Performs water and feedwater testing and treatment to ensure consistent steam and chilled water production.
- Conducts mandatory hourly walkthroughs to inspect facility assets, check for deficiencies, and log all required technical readings.
- Corrects and documents any equipment operating outside of normal parameters prior to shift end according to written procedures.
- Monitors Capitol Lake levels to prevent flooding or extreme lows, notifying supervision immediately of any unusual issues.
- Serves as the primary contact for after‑hours non‑emergency calls regarding Thurston County DES facilities, prioritizing and dispatching service requests as needed.
- Initiates required incident reports and documents all activities into the Mainsaver system and plant logbooks.

To qualify for this position, a candidate must possess one (1) of the following experience and/or education options. Applicants who are within six (6) months of meeting the required qualifications may be considered for hire. Selected candidates may be placed on a structured six (6) month training plan as part of the hiring and probationary period.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationary or marine high‑pressure boilers and heating systems.
- Certificate of completion of an advanced Stationary Engineer course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college; AND two (2) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationary or marine high‑pressure boilers and heating systems.
- One (1) year of experience as a Stationary Engineer 1.
- Three (3) years of experience as a Steam Propulsion Engineer.
- Comprehensive knowledge of high‑pressure boiler operations, auxiliary equipment, maintenance materials, safety protocols, and automatic control systems.
- Knowledge and experience in managing chilled water plant operations alongside facility heating, ventilation, lighting, power, and related mechanical equipment.
- Skilled in testing and analyzing steam boiler operations, keeping detailed records, writing reports, and instructing or supervising personnel.
- Capable of working independently with minimal supervision while performing heavy manual labor under extreme temperature conditions.
