General Description

The Director of Forest Operations & Environmental Programs provides scientific and technical leadership on forest management and implementation of Washington’s Forest Practices rules and related state and federal requirements. This position supports WFPA’s policy and regulatory priorities by translating science, operational realities, and compliance constraints into clear, credible recommendations for WFPA staff, member companies, and decision-makers. The Director evaluates the operational and economic implications of policy proposals, identifies feasible alternatives, and helps shape solutions that protect public resources while maintaining a viable forest products industry.

The Director reports to the Senior Director of Forest Policy and serves as staff to the WFPA Forest Policy Committee, Executive Committee, Board of Trustees, and associated task groups and ad hoc committees.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Management or closely related field.
  • Five (5)+ years of field experience in forest management, silviculture, harvest operations, or closely related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of Washington Forest Practices rules, how they are applied in field operations and administered through permitting and compliance processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and clearly communicate real-world operational implications of regulatory proposals, scientific findings, and policy alternatives.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to produce clear technical summaries, briefings, and public comments.
  • Sound interpersonal skills, ability to positively support member interests and promote sustainable forestry in multi-stakeholder forums.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and follow through with minimal oversight.
  • Track record of reliability, sound judgment, and effective collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with common office software and document management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in multi-stakeholder negotiation, collaborative decision-making, or structured policy processes.
  • Ability to develop, use, and interpret GIS-based data and mapping products.
  • Specialized education and/or experience in forest inventory, valuation, or operations planning.
  • Experience in forestry policy development processes.
