The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Olympic Region as a Wildland Fire Management Supervisor (WFMSup)/Wildland Fire Management Lead (WFML) In-Training. DNR is home to Washington’s largest on‑call fire department that is responsible for protecting over 13 million acres in both state and privately‑owned lands.
Working with interagency partners, DNR embraces an all‑hands all‑lands vision. DNR’s Fire Program serves the communities of Washington and is a strong advocate of wildland fire prevention, suppression, and mitigation. The Washington State DNR is looking for a bright, quick‑thinking individual to fill the role of Wildland Fire Management Supervisor for the Straits Unit in the Olympic Region. This position is perfect for those who enjoy hazard‑risk mitigation, collaborating with interagency peers, and using professional judgment to determine necessary strategies, tactics, and resources during fire season.
This individual will be expected to provide critical leadership in initial and extended attack fire suppression. Strong decision‑making skills and a desire to take on responsibility are valued and encouraged. - This position assists in providing leadership and oversight of the fire program in Clallam and Jefferson Counties for the Washington Department of Natural Resources. You will have the responsibility of hiring, training, and providing daily leadership for 1 engine module leader and 3 firefighters.
- This position also assists with our regulation and prevention efforts within the region. Duties include public speaking about fire prevention activities to groups, including school children and homeowners. Posting and maintenance of fire danger signs and kiosks, industrial fire tool inspections, and burn permitting are also duties of this position.
- This position assists with and coordinates Forest Resilience activities within the region. These activities include prescribed fire support, fuels treatments, and site visits for landowners.
- This position's main responsibility in the summer is serving as an engine boss on one of our engines. Supervising four employees during Wildland Fire Operations in the region, in the state, and nationally.
This may be filled as an in‑training position. This is designated as an 18‑24‑month training plan (may be extended to 36 months). If you complete all elements of the training steps in a shorter amount of time, we may waive the remainder of the time required. Candidates will be considered as Wildland Fire Management Lead (WFML) In‑Training or Wildland Fire Management Supervisor (WFMSup), depending on qualifications.

- NWCG Qualification of Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1).
