This position has regular contact with or control over Indian Children and Vulnerable Adults. In compliance with Federal Law, this position will not be filled by an applicant with any felonious offense or any two or more misdemeanor offenses under Federal, State, or Tribal law involving crimes of violence; sexual assault, molestation, exploitation, contact, or prostitution; crimes against persons; or offenses committed against children.

GENERAL SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the performance of probation casework duties pertaining to adult offenders as assigned by the court. The Adult Probation Officer will perform moderately complex probation work which includes investigations, development of plans, preparing reports, counseling, supervision, file maintenance, record keeping, observing, and attendance at court proceedings.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform.   • Provides supervision of offenders placed on probation by Tribal Court.
  • Refers offenders to treatment providers as required.
  • Monitors the compliance of adult offenders per probation conditions.
  • Prepares various reports for the court including pre-sentencing reports, violation reports, special reports, and discharges.
  • Attends Tribal Court hearings and provides testimony and recommendations as required.
  • Maintains case files including keeping a written log of contacts.
  • Works effectively with other agencies including law enforcement and the Tribal Prosecutor.
  • Refers offenders to community service sites.
  • Assist other departments as required.
  • Participates in training as required.
  • Maintains an on-call schedule as required.
  • Conduct search & seizures, home inspections, and observed drug tests as dictated by circumstance following the proper chain of command.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in behavioral sciences, social work, criminal justice or related human service field and three (3) years of probation work experience OR an equivalent combination of recent appropriate experience and/or post-secondary education.
  • Must have a valid Washington State Driver's license and be insurable under the Nisqually Indian Tribe's insurance policy.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and a pre-employment drug screening test.
  • Shall complete an approved certification program during the probationary period.

This position does not supervise.

  • Ability to evaluate and assess people and their behavior.
  • Ability to effectively use office equipment and computer.
  • Ability to work under stressful and sometimes violent conditions.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to make independent judgment calls.
  • Background Check
    : I authorize Nisqually Indian Tribe or its designated third-party agency to conduct a background investigation, which may include verification of past employment, education, criminal history, and other relevant records.

  • Drug Screening
    : I understand that I will be required to undergo a drug screening test as a condition of employment (or engagement). A positive result, refusal to test, or tampering with the test may result in disqualification or termination of employment.
