The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a Bridge Engineer 4 to serve as a senior technical lead and inventory data specialist responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and accessibility of Washington's bridge data. You will lead the collection, management, and stewardship of bridge geometric, feature, and geospatial data across WSDOT's bridge inventory and enterprise systems.
Your work will have statewide impact, ensuring National Bridge Inventory (NBI), Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS), GIS, and Bridge Vertical Clearance Trip Planner data remain accurate, consistent, and aligned with Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and WSDOT requirements. This information supports bridge inspection and management, commercial vehicle operations, transportation planning, and public information—helping keep Washington's transportation system safe, reliable, and cost-effective.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
- Lead GIS and geospatial data stewardship for WSDOT bridge inventory, ensuring authoritative enterprise datasets are accurate, complete, and current.
- Collect, manage, and maintain bridge geometric and feature data in Bridge Works, including LiDAR data capture and associated files and software.
- Ensure bridge geometric and route data conform to FHWA and WSDOT requirements.
- Provide technical direction, work assignments, and on-the-job training to a supporting Bridge Engineer on bridge inventory data and related systems.
- Develop and maintain custom SQL views using bridge inventory data to support internal stakeholders and public data needs.
- Provide primary application support and data management for the Bridge Vertical Clearance Trip Planner, including lane entries, photo documentation, GIS records, and data validation.
- Coordinate application and data integration efforts with technology development staff and Commercial Vehicle Services to maintain accurate vertical clearance information.
- Review vertical clearance data and resolve data quality issues in coordination with bridge inspection staff.
- Develop, maintain, and support GIS applications used by WSDOT Bridge Inspectors, including mapping and routing applications.
- Update and maintains GIS workflows to current enterprise environments in coordination with technology development and database administration staff.
- Maintain and publish the Washington State Bridge Inspection Manual, including Ferries and Dive Manuals, incorporating policy updates and managing version control and document history.
- Provide training and technical guidance on GIS workflows, bridge feature data, and Bridge Vertical Clearance Trip Planner processes.
- Perform geospatial mapping, participate in Bridge Emergency Operations Center activation when assigned, and perform other duties as assigned.

- Technical Professional Knowledge – Comprehensive knowledge of SNBI, Bridge Works (WSBIS), and WSDOT geometric inventory and feature data requirements sufficient to maintain accurate bridge records and support transportation asset management activities.
- Bridge Geometric Data Compliance – Comprehensive knowledge of FHWA National Bridge Inventory (NBI) geometric data requirements and Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) reporting standards sufficient to support regulatory compliance and accurate inventory reporting.
