Overview
The Department of Ecology is hiring Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) Crew Supervisor 1 positions. WCC is an environmental service program within the Shorelands and Environmental Assistance (SEA) Program. This is a project position funded until June 30, 2027. This posting will be used to fill vacancies in the Southwest region (Clark, Pierce, and Thurston counties) and is open continuous. This is an in-person, field-based role with no telework.

Multiple locations in the Southwest region (Clark, Pierce, Thurston counties). Open continuous.
What you will doYou will supervise and mentor a crew of five WCC members in natural resource assignments. As a supervisor, you may lead projects in:
- Habitat Enhancement: riparian restoration, noxious weed control, in-stream salmon recovery work, etc.
- Recreational Enhancement: campground upgrades and maintenance, trail construction/maintenance, boardwalk installation, etc.
- Spike (travel) projects: crews travel around Washington for restoration and recreation work. Food and lodging provided when traveling. Time on spike projects may be 25–75% of project time.
WCC is a nationally recognized disaster response program. Supervisors may lead crew deployments to local and national disasters.
Typical Schedule and Working Conditions- Schedule:
40 hours/week, Monday–Thursday 7:00 am–5:30 pm; travel may require Thursday–Thursday, 10-hour days with six days off prior. - Work in various environments: inclement weather, rough terrain, long walking distances, lifting up to 60 pounds, and possible overnight travel.
Supervision and Project Management
- Support crew members in developing career/education objectives; ensure safety, well‑being, and inclusion.
- Recruit, interview, and select crew members. Plan and assign work tasks. Evaluate performance and provide feedback; document issues and recommendations for disciplinary action.
- Track and complete conservation projects; monitor use of materials/tools/equipment; communicate progress with sponsors and WCC staff; assign tasks.
- Complete paperwork (timesheets, travel logs, safety/production reports, hiring/termination forms, member evaluations) and ensure safety and maintenance of equipment (tools and vehicles).
Required
- Three (3) years of experience equivalent to WCC field work, youth mentorship, or outdoor leadership/crew lead roles.
- OR completion of a two-year Forest Technology Vocational Program with one year of related field experience.
- OR an Associate’s degree in Environmental Science/Studies or Forestry with one year of related field experience.
- Qualifying military experience may substitute, year-for-year, for field experience.
Special Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Background check will be conducted pre-hire; results may affect suitability but do not automatically preclude employment.
Preferred/Desirable Qualifications
- Experience in supervision and training; natural resource maintenance; use of hand and power tools.
- Field certifications such as Wilderness First Aid, Pesticide Operator, and Wildland Firefighter Red Card.
- FEMA Disaster Response Training (ICS-300, IS-700).
