Title: Wildlife Scientific Collection Permit Coordinator – F&W Biologist 3
Location: Thurston County – Olympia, WA
Salary: $5,531.46 – $7,443.72 monthly
Job Type: Part‑Time – Permanent
Remote Employment: Flexible/Hybrid (up to 80% telework)
The Wildlife Program’s statewide lead on Scientific Collection Permits. Manage permitting processes, maintain related systems, and provide timely, accurate decisions that support conservation, management, and enforcement of Washington wildlife.
Responsibilities- Coordinate Scientific Collection Permitting for the Wildlife Program.
- Review, research, and approve or deny Scientific Collection Permit applications and accompanying documents in collaboration with relevant reviewers.
- Receive applications, evaluate wildlife impacts and regulatory compliance, facilitate review by subject‑matter experts, recommend limits on take, apply conditions, and issue final determinations timely and in accordance with policy.
- Communicate with permit applicants to ensure thorough study plans and collection methods, addressing agency feedback regarding wildlife impacts in final plans and permits.
- Manage and coordinate updates and improvements to the Scientific Collection Permit process and associated systems, including development of permit policy and biological standards.
- Coordinate letters of authorization for take of protected wildlife species, including initial review, requirement drafting, and authorization process coordination with agency management.
- Option1:
Two (2) years as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist
2. - Option2:
Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, environmental science, or related natural resources science; plus three (3) years of professional experience in wildlife or habitat management or research. A Master’s degree substitutes for one (1) year of experience; a Ph.D. substitutes for two (2) years. - Option3:
Seven (7) years of professional experience in wildlife or habitat management or research.
- Experience
- Conducting research and interpreting wildlife policies, laws, and regulations.
- Collecting and summarizing ecological data using databases and tools (e.g., ArcGIS, Survey 123, Microsoft Access, SQL).
- Interpreting and applying environmental regulations and laws in coordination with multiple subject‑matter experts.
- Working punctually under time‑sensitive conditions, independently and as a team member.
- Providing clear guidance to team members for collaborative projects.
- Writing formal correspondence and technical documents that adhere to established standards.
- Managing permit processes and associated data.
- Organizing multiple assignments with competing priorities to produce accurate, thorough, on‑time results.
- Knowledge
- Environmental regulations and fish & wildlife laws.
- Project management practices.
- Washington wildlife ecology, species distributions, and habitat associations.
- Population biology, conservation biology, and ecological systems.
- Wildlife survey, monitoring, research techniques, disease monitoring, and surveillance.
- Data management, statistical and spatial analysis, information synthesis and delivery.
- Resource management agency missions and collaborative approaches.
- Conservation planning and endangered species recovery.
- Ability
- Effective verbal and written communication with internal and external agency representatives and the public.
- Production of basic GIS products.
- Analysis of environmental information to apply policy and solutions in permit decisions.
- Resolution of complex disputes.
